That's one of the ways in which he's kind of clever. By being ambiguous, he knows his supporters will hunt down (or fabricate) any indicators that can be used to fit that statement.

Is he aware that you don't have to be President of the United States to help people? If his greatest love was helping people, what is he doing now? Jimmy Carter is a good example of a person who was President and then went on to continue helping people in his post-POTUS life.

It's simple: The people he was helping as "president" were the good people. You know, televangelists, CEOs, stockholders, racist cops. The sort of people who really need his help.
The "people" he can help now (with his own money? Are you InSaNe?!?) are just poor people who don't deserve it.

He was particularly proud of hiring small businesses and refusing to pay the agreed-upon price while threatening years-long lawsuits. He loved the NDAs that kept these cheated business owners from going public.
