I know, if we abolish taxes then it will solve all our issues. Bush proved it, did he not?

Go go perpetual motion machine!

Not quite.

A lot of economics is about confidence. If enough people believe that the dollar is going to be worth less in the near future then it will be worth less before then.

The laws of economics are subject to psychology and can change. The laws of physics are not.

Do tell on the correct way to raise taxes and spend more in order to solve all our problems.

Sweden and Norway seem to have good models. Of course, we could just cut all taxes and end up like Somolia.

TAXATION

Direct taxes are imposed on income and profits, when officials can collect them. In 1986, tax rates on wages and salaries ranged from 0% to 18.9%. Income from trade and the professions was taxed at rates of up to 35%. Indirect taxes are imposed on imports, exports, mortgages, vehicle registration, sugar, alcohol, and a number of other goods and services. In 2003, Somolia's sales tax rate was 10%.

The problem in Somolia isn't zero taxes = zero government, it's zero government = zero taxes.

My guess is the local warlords don't have quite the collection problem the central government does.

It seems that the argument is that "the stimulus failed" because it, apparently, wasn't big enough to deal with the actual economic crisis that occurred. Oh sure, it met the goals of what it was supposed to do in terms of jobs and economic growth, but because the situation was so dire, it was not sufficient to meet what was needed.

Then again, we have to ask the question, why was it so insufficient? Perhaps it was because the same clowns who are now gloating in the fact that it didn't work to their satisfaction fought to prevent it from being big enough to solve the problem.

So they fought to limit the size of the stimulus package, and are now criticizing on the grounds that it ultimately was not big enough to solve the problem.

My god it's almost like you have some connection with reality unlike the right wingers that think tax breaks will solve things in spite of the fact such a tactic working has never been true in the history of everything!

Spend on things that will tangibly help the future economy like infrastructure. California has a high speed rail system just waiting to be built that would generate 160,000 jobs in the short term and nearly 600,000 after full system build out.

How much of the stimulus was geared to this program?
