Didn't Rush Limbaugh try to meddle in the 2008 Democratic presidential primary, by dragging it out as long as possible? Didn't work out now, did it.

Virtually all of Maher's viewers are left wing. His show is not going to do much to sway people to vote D instead of R.

Limbaugh's plan worked fine; I do seem to remember the Democratic primary in 2008 dragging out almost to the convention. It may not have helped the GOP as much as hoped, but it certainly contributed to the rancor in the party that lasted right up until Obama won.

There's another good and funny comparison: The (UK) Guardian's letter-writing campaign to Clark County, Ohio in 2004. They had the brilliant idea of having Brits write letters to residents of that small county, which Gore had narrowly won in 2000, exhorting them to vote for John Kerry.

It backfired, possibly because of missives like this one:

Probably no American president in all history has been so universally hated abroad as George W Bush: for his bullying unilateralism, his dismissal of international treaties, his reckless indifference to the aspirations of other nations and cultures, his contempt for institutions of world government …

You can just see a fence-sitter in Ohio getting that letter and saying, hey, if the world hates Bush that much, I'd better vote for Kerry, right? BTW, that particular bit was written by John Le Carre, the spy novelist. And here's Richard Dawkins' contribution:

Don't be so ashamed of your president: the majority of you didn't vote for him. If Bush is finally elected properly, that will be the time for Americans travelling abroad to simulate a Canadian accent. Please don't let it come to that. Vote against Bin Laden's dream candidate. Vote to send Bush packing.

Clark County residents probably decided their Canadian accents were passable, eh? For:

In 2000, Al Gore won Clark County by 324 votes. And since Ralph Nader received 1,347 votes, we can assume Gore's margin would have been larger without Nader on the ballot. On Tuesday George Bush won Clark County by 1,620 votes.

Curious: a headline in The Daily Beast reads: "BILL MAHER TARGETS IOWA LOON." Upon reading the actual story, however, the Flip-A-District stunt is discussed, but neither Iowa nor Steve King get a mention.

Steve King MUST be the Iowa Loon.

One wonders whether King's name got leaked, but there was no confirmation, so the story got pulled, yet the headline remained.

Who would we replace the current bunch with? Just more of the same, that is, politicians.

I could name 2 people that are running against someone I really, really, want out. One of those is actually a Republican (primary battle). It isn't Steve King... but he's almost as bad from where I stand.

...and if Kansas 1st district actually flips.... you know that will have been a challenge. It's where the Koch brothers live.
