Cont: The Russian invasion of Ukraine part 6

Putin didn't really have to start this war, but Ukraine could probably end it quickly by giving its pro-Russia regions to Russia, and thereby say "bye bye" to a lot of future problems.

This is actually an extremely simple situation but, when you deal with war and peace issues, the simplest ideas are not necessarily the best understood.

Ukraine (and perhaps its many supporters on this forum) would like to defeat and humiliate Russia, but I don't think this is working out very well for them.

What "pro-russia" regions. Crimea was pro-Ukraine, and the Donbas and Lughansk pirate republics had to be set up by russian armed forces.

No need to keep that going further in this thread. Michel H's... selectively pro-Russia nonsense is likely better kept more to the split thread where he tries to claim that it's all Ukraine and the West's fault for not welcoming invaders with open arms. Outside force invading to destroy democracy = protecting and upholding democracy!

In a way you have to admire the way the Russians are solidifying NATO and the EU.
Poland was slowly breaking away due to its moves towards one party rule and lack of free press, but I'm guessing this tweet might make them reconsider

To paraphrase for those not wanting to click a link, Mendevev claims "Poland is going to dissapear, along with it's Prime Minister"

Poland is not breaking away from either, because she needs the EU for money, and NATO for protection. Poland’s experiences with Russia makes it staunchly anti-Russia, and as regards the EU, the Polish leadership would like to have it changed from inside into a union of dictatorships. Its natural ally is Hungary, but the Hungarian proto-dictator Orban is an admirer of Putin and the main ally of Russia in the EU. This is a difficult position for Poland.

Hmm. I doubted the source when it claimed the Russians were blaming bad weather, weeks in advance of the annual event. That just didn't make sense even as an excuse. When it went on to report claims Putin sent a body double on his closely-photographed visit to occupied Ukraine my BS alarm was jangling.

It uses the Daily Star as one of its sources. The Daily Star is not known for its reliable reporting.

I wouldn't be surprised if Putin does use body doubles tho.

Sure, just probably not likely for a photo op. Anyway, I'm not seeing any confirmation of the rumour Russia's cancelled its victory day parade. I gather they did cancel 2021's due to Covid-19, but to cancel this year's would send a very alarming message to the people that all is going very far from well. It just seems absurdly unlikely.

Uhm the rumors are not, I understand, about the big Red Square parade in Moscow before Putin. There are smaller parades in each oblast, in the regional capitals, and for example those in Belgorod and Kursk, oblasts bordering Ukraine, parades are said to be in jeopardy due to security concerns.
Gotta admit though I didn't read the article linked upthread. I read other news sources.
