Rhodesia was the breadbasket of Africa under the British.
Its a good slogan. Since we write the history books we have a certian advantage.
How was britian in a position to aquire the area in the first place?
Under Mugabe, Zimbabwe is wracked with malnutrition and famine.
Few years out of date there. Wierd thing is production is actualy rising. The trick is to realise that most of the European famers in Zimbabwe weren't actualy very good farmers. This is to be expected a lot of them were just average post war people looking for something to do. They got away with it due to the shear volume of land they had.
Western culture gets around limitations of resources and environment.
Not true of course. Attempts to do that in parts of Africa resulted in massive death tolls that were only sustainable due to advantages back home. Only reason European got into south Africa as early as they did is that the area has a Mediterranean climate. Bantu food parcel doesn't work in that climate but the European one does
Easter Island is crawling with attempts to get around limits of resources and environment but didn't solve their fundamental problems.
Reality pretty much any group of humans will try and get around limitations of resources and environment but if you are dealt a duff hand there is a limit to what can be done. The sub-saharan Africa food parcel doesn't allow you to support large populations and the lack of large domesticatable animals makes it hard to move goods long distance. The large changes in latitude don't help matters.
Look at Israel. Sand and rocks with no oil but an economy more vibrant and energetic than anything the Arabs came up with.
And interesting levels of financial subsidy.
Culture matters. Ideas matter.
If that was the case Greece would rule the world. Geography matters. Britain just lucked out in having a robust climate combined with being next to Europe while being isolated enough that iron-bridge didn't have to worry about being randomly invaded.
