Well, you didn't go through the procedure, did you?

We need to erase your memory of the crime, erase whatever memories led up to the crime, erase whatever trauma and personality defects caused you to do the crime, and then we can start talking.
Cool. Ive got the memory and attention span of a goldfish, so I'm already there.
Although to some people, nothing short of completely burning away the original identity will satisfy them. Or not even that, since obviously the meat sack itself must hold some measure of responsibility. Bad DNA, bad!
I dunno. If a person is the sum total of their experiences, just one experience after the alleged 'crime' and they are not the droids the police are looking for. QEMFD.
I'm reminded of Planescape Torment. What can change the nature of a man?
Tequila.

One of Larry Niven's short story ideas was based on being able to use those folk who had themselves cryogenically frozen in the hope of a future cure for an illness or for rejuvenation being processed to a gloop and their memories extracted (it was back when the speculation around RNA "memory" started to be floated) these would then be impressed into the brain of a murderer. (Niven had some nasty little little wrinkles in the story, the body was still that of a citizen that was a murderer so if the ressurected person wasn't of use to the government they could wipe the body again and try another personality..)

The Babylon 5 episode Passing Through Gethsemane uses a similar idea. But the memories/personality is not really wiped, just supressed. And someone forces a nasty ex-murderer to remember what he did and then kills him.

Then suffers the same 'mind-wipe'.

And featuring the incomparable Brad Dourif chewing the scenery as only he can do.
