The real reason we lost Vietnam: Communist Sympathizers

Now, I don't like war, and I would have been against the war during Vietnam, but that would be because I neither like being in the military, and nor do I like being in wars. But I must say, the success of the communists during Vietnam was due to greater determination. And most Americans, I believe, unlike me, are perfectly willing to put their lives and limbs on the line if they like the cause they're fighting for. I'm just an exception.

One of the big myths of the Vietnam War was that the U.S. had a harder time than the North Vietnamese. Actually the North Vietnamese had a much harder time. Those bombings we did in the jungles were resulting in lots of guerilla fighters losing their hearing according to this show I saw. We also bombed North Vietnamese cities. America didn't have any cities being bombed. Yet, they say that America had a harder time.

According to this newspaper article I read, the North Vietnamese manpower got so low that North Vietnam started using women as soldiers. These women were fed such meager poor meals when they were out fighting the war, that many of them came back sterile, meaning that they were unable to bear children. America didn't run so low in manpower that it had to start using women as soldiers, and feed them a poor diet. Yet, they say that America had a harder time.

So you want to know the real reason we lost the war? I'll tell ya. We had large numbers of people in our country, who were against the war, because they liked the North Vietnamese government better than the American one, and they felt a victory by the North Vietnamese in South Vietnam would help the spread of communism around the world. These people got in the way of the U.S. government and stopped it from having a victory. These people wouldn't let the U.S. win.

Dear Idiot:

Glad to see you took a break from listening to Rush to scrawl some nonsense.

Um, you seem to have forgotten the fact that America's sons were coming back home every day by the dozens in body bags. Americans who opposed the war got sick and tired of sending people to die for a war that showed no sign it would ever be won. Eventually, these sensible people became a majority and forced change. They didn't prefer communism, cretin.

You lost the war because the opposition cared more, fought harder and were prepared to suffer more losses.

You had every resource you could possibly want except willpower.

What you have described is the "stab in the back" myth beloved of the German army after WW1.

Now that´s why it sounded so familiar to me...

So if one person is against the war because that person just doesn't like war, and another person is against the war because they are communist, and the war fails, the first person did not cause the defeat, but the second person did?

And here I'd heard the reason we lost was an Elders of Zion Plot with Kissinger in the lead (public) position. :D

In one sense, JAR is correct. By the end of the war, communist sympathizers were everywhere in both countries. The brutal, even criminal tactics of the US (using chemical warfare, carpet bombing etc.) had turned many if not most of the South Vietnamese against them. Since they looked alike we couldn't tell who the enemy was. Eventually it was the US against most of Viet Nam.

Yeah, they were communist sympatizers, because we convinced them that even communism was better than the US. This is somewhat similar to the situation in Iraq where Sunnis and Shiites are united in only one thing: their hatred for the US.

@Tricky:

Like that old "good news and bad news" joke:

There´s good news and bad news.
The good news: the US are uniting the world.
The bad news: the world is uniting against the US

Very wrong JAR.

At the time, the USA did not view Vietnam as a war, it viewed it as a police action. Meaning that the USA was there to help the government of South Vietnam maintain its security instead of being there with the goal of moving ground combat troops into North Vietnam and dictating terms to Ho Chi Min.

If one shirks from actually fighting a war, then it is quite difficult to win the war.

By the way, the North Vietnamese were quite dedicated to their cause; just take a look at what they did to the Japanese and French that tried to take over their country.

um, folks, do you think it might just be possible that JAR is playing with us? That he continues to post really strange views just to see what we do, and that he is just joking around? Just a thought...

Yeah maybe your are right Hal.

It does sound like something he would do.

Yes, Hal. I have thought the same about Franko and others. But I repeat the same answer. Stupid statements have to be contested, even if the intent is to troll. Since not everyone will know or agree that the person is not speaking their true mind (this is a problem with forums), all you can do is contest the statement of their forum persona. I do not agree that we should ignore trolls, because by ignoring them we give our implicit acceptance of what they do. Mr. Randi and I disagree here. He fights tirelessly against paranormal fakers. I fight against internet fakers (not as tirelessly as James). I think they are both noble causes.

WHAT??? You mean he might be a troll??? No, I just can't bring myself to believe that! He must be sincere! Yeah, that's it, that's the ticket!

And here I thought that good old Tricky Dicky and our good buddies, the Chinese went and negotiated a peaceful settlement that got us out of Vietnam honorably.

Nixon: Yet another golden example of presidential virtue.

The fact their U.S. supported government fell even as we pulled out is irrelevant.

It was a "tie". Honest. Nixon wouldn't lie about such a thing. No president would lie.
