Merged The Perry meltdown

If Rick Perry gets elected president I think the first thing he should get rid of is the office of the president. That would eliminate 1/3 of government and allow job creators the job creaty atmosphere they need.

Rick Perry for President in 2012 (until he does away with it!)

I never get this teleprompter meme. The Obama I recognise is the one who gave a competent, long and detailed Q&A session in front of the House Republicans last year without the need of a teleprompter.

Professionalism demands the use of a prompter. Obama used a teleprompter. Bush had a earpiece. Any successful national politician will use those, or just plain notes on the podium, to deliver any prepared remarks. Even Sarah Palin did this, but she was inept enough to write the notes on her hand...

By itself, it's just a brain-fart. Happens to all of us.

The problem is that Perry has had a lot of brain farts in these debates, and his poll numbers kept slipping as a result. He really needed to come out strong during the debate, and he screwed the pooch.

That's why people are saying his campaign is dead...Not because he had one goof, but it was one goof in a series of goofs when he really, really, really needed to not goof.

Oops.

Exactly. If Perry had performed well in prior debates it wouldn't be an issue. His odds of becoming president at InTrade reached 22% at their peak; today they are at 1.8%. They dropped from 4% after the debate last night.

Dontcha love the quote from Cain in that article in the OP... Oh, I don't know - - - the American public are very forgiving.

Yeah, ya hope so. Riiiight, Herman.

Those of you pulling for Huntsman... just wait eight weeks or so. Perry's in free fall with Cain in dive-bomb mode to see if he can beat him to the bottom of the heap. Newt gets to be the new contender for a couple of weeks, then Ron Paul, ... by Christmas Huntsman ought to get his turn.

A note to Rick's supporters: When Ron Paul looks at you like you're crazy, there's no where left to go. Pack the bags.

What that says to me is that he doesn't really have an economic plan that he has carefully considered. What he has is a script. And he flubbed his lines.

^^ This.

Perry's flub makes me think that he chose those departments because they are unpopular amongst the base instead of choosing them for valid reasons. If he had sound reasoning behind choosing those departments, it is likely that he would have recalled which ones they were much more easily.

The debates are tests where if you flub an answer on one question you could fail the whole test. If you do fail there are more debates but you've got to shine to overcome prior failure. If you keep screwing up at some point you become irrelevant. Perry just reached that point.

It's not like Bush never used a stack of 3x5 cards on the podium.

Yes. Candidates can get eliminated for the Dumbest reasons.
Just as Dukakis and Dean.

Or, Jerry Ford, if he were still alive

During a critical debate with Jimmy Carter a month before the presidential election, President Gerald R. Ford declared in response to a question from the New York Times' Max Frankel, "There is no Soviet dominance of Eastern Europe." While the statement may have been prophetic, given the events of a decade later, it was absurd at the time.

The press pounced on this passage of the debate and wrote of little else for days afterward, so much so that a public initially convinced that Ford had won the debate soon turned overwhelmingly against him.

A brain fart is not big deal, but his willingness to throw the EPA into that third slot does indicate that he has not devoted a lot of thought to this.

I thought he went to school in Texas, not Penn State.
The Vatican of college football.

From the CNN article on the incident, we have the following brilliant trolling effort from Romney:

"I will tell you, it is three agencies of government when I get there that are gone," Perry said. "Commerce, Education, and the -- what's the third one there? Let's see. Okay. Commerce, Education, and the..."

"EPA?" Mitt Romney offered.

"EPA, there you go," Perry said.

When pressed by moderator John Harwood if the Environmental Protection Agency was indeed the third agency he proposes shuttering, Perry admitted that it wasn't.

Aww, I would've enjoyed seeing Perry in a presidential debate against Obama. That would've been fun. I suppose Mitt Romney will do, but I highly doubt he'll forget anything :(...

The senior Republican senator, Kay Baily Hutchison openly despises him, mostly because of the deep-in-the-mud campaign he ran against her when she challenged him for Governor.

No kidding. My grandparents were pretty deep into the Republican Party of Texas, and my grandma said there is still huge controversy about that race. People who if you cut them would bleed Republicans would rather vote for a Democrat than for Perry because of that race.

I think CNN screwed the pooch there.

At the debate, Perry was facing Texas Rep. Ron Paul when he started to answer the question.
"I will tell you, it is three agencies of government when I get there that are gone," Perry said. "Commerce, Education, and the -- what's the third one there? Let's see. Okay. Commerce, Education, and the..."

It was Paul who trolled him. First Perry said 3 agencies, and then he looked over at Paul while trying to name the the third, and Paul said "5" - Then Paul suggested "EPA" .... very helpful of Paul :D
