The Perilous Whiteness of Pumpkins

I'm at a disadvantage since I never had one - I don't even know if they're on the menu at Starbucks in my country - but no matter how they look, smell or taste, I think that it probably takes some effort to actually hate (and not merely dislike) pumpkin spice lattes! :)

I've never had one either but.

There's more than lattes

Apparently, we have in in Denmark, too: Pumpkin Spice Latté is for coffee what Pornhub is for love. :)
I suspect that pumpkin spice would be called julekrydderi, 'Christmas spice,' around here. With no racist connotations, at least as far as I know ...
Of course here too I think "pumpkin spice" is about the spice that's used on pumpkins, and has little if any relationship to the pumpkin, especially as most pumpkin spice is probably applied to the horrible insipid go in a can that passes for pumpkin, but there is that fatal name. Poor pumpkin. There's probably as much pumpkin in pumpkin spice latte as there is lobster in a plate of lobster sauce.

You can cook up racist connotations for just about anything, if you cultivate the idea that it represents some kind of cultural privilege that is then considered racist by the commutative property of sloppy thought.

Which is none, and is not designed to be. Pumpkin spice is a spice that's intended to be used with pumpkins, not intended to contain pumpkin; likewise, lobster sauce is a sauce intended to use with lobster, not to contain lobster. OK, I looked them both up on wikipedia. ;) And both can, of course, also be used for other purposes. As the main ingredient of pumpkin spice is cinnamon, I'm really not surprised that Starbucks serves pumpkin spice flavored lattes.

To react to dann, apparently pumpkin spice is also similar to Dutch "speculaaskruiden", a spice mix used in the speculaas biscuit and kruidnoten confectionery that are associated with our St. Nicholas feast. The kruidnoten is the stuff that Zwarte soot-black rainbow whatever Piet typically throws into the crowds.

When I came into this thread, I didn't even know there are pumpkins that are white on the outside. I'm still a bit at a loss about the claimed racist connotations of pumpkins, but I may miss a lot of cultural background here. But dragging pumpkin spice as some sort of evidence into this seems far-fetched to me.

It is far fetched. This is just another case of useless people trying to justify their paychecks by engaging in pseudo-intellectual gobbledegook.

Or people exploring deeper understandings beyond blind acceptance/adherence of the culture and languge we have been indoctrinated into.

Hello CP Snow.

Well, I guess it's not surprising that people **** pumpkins, after all, we do carve faces on them.

And the faces are more realistic than what I see on half the women around here. First, spray on a coat of primer....

So when is ISF going to send me a paycheck?

Hey, I just noticed my apple is colored on the outside, but white on the inside.

Do you think anybody would feel violated if I sprinkled some spice mix* on it?

*I keep a 1/2 pt canning jar of what I call "cake spices"- 2T cinnamon, 1T each of ginger, cloves, all spice, and nutmeg. Canning jars fit my blender base so give it a whirl to mix. Latest recipe to use it- home made applesauce. Does that make me a racist?

Only if it's an Arkansas Black apple.

You are a racist if you ignore the red and yellow skinned varieties.

And, why can we get away with naming the Native American apple a "crab" apple?

Same for the "Choke Cherry"?

NOW where's my pay check? :D

I don't like most white foods and I'm white. My truck is black, my pants are black, my phone is black, even my lighter is black.

Totally confused.
