Aren't there really more layers than just theist or non-theist (atheist), for instance:
*Not believing in god or gods.
*Believing in god or gods that operate in all times and places (i.e. before creation (big bang, current reality (the here-and-now, the universe), and after-death).
*Only believing in god or gods that would be found before creation.
*Only believing in god or gods that would be found before creation and after death.
*Believing in multiple levels of gods operating between or restricted to the previous examples' categories.
There's just a few that seem to be inconsistent with just having the two categories. For instance, the third example would be more closely related to atheism, since that person would argue nothing at all could be known about his beliefs since they reside only before creation. Both in that third example, and the fourth, the 3rd paragraph in the original post comes into play.
