The mystery of human imagination

Although it's entirely possible that a virus or bacteria could wipe out the human species. I guess that hits a little too close to home nowadays.
That doesn't bother me as much as humans scrambling DNA of millions of species. Apes would probably survive a human-specific pathogen, and it's a twinkling from apes to a turbocharged path to creative, manipulative intelligence, which yes, I do see as some sort of pinnacle to build on. For better or worse.

The next Michelangelo, Mozart or Newton could be a few hundred thousand years away, vs. hundreds of millions. But then so would the technology of war.

War being a big driver of creativity as well. Maybe the biggest.
 
There are also tricks to the trade. Humorists have a variety of linguistic tricks, such as confusing one reference with another due to ambiguity, exaggeration, and so on. In this, George Carlin was the master. The laughter is created by a surprising juxtaposition or twisted perspective, thus the delight. Very crafted and deliberate, however. Like magicians, who use a set of few things to create highly disparate effects. This is the power of discrete combinatorial systems; few elements, seeming infinite variety.

Carlin's masterpiece was providing a case of pure linguistic creativity, using, as one would guess, shocking behavior. Nevertheless, he was absolutely correct in assuming he was likely the first person to ever pronounce those words in that order, ever.
"As soon as I stick this hot poker up my ass, I'm going to chop my dick off."
Obscene, yes, but it proved the point.

More broadly, there does seem to be a skill which involves being more capable of projecting conceptual space onto physical space and tracing or sounding out the result. This does seem unique to more highly creative individuals, and cannot be trained. Yet heavy and almost manic-obsessive practice also seems to play a role.

Another realm of things involves using imagining to train motor neurons. This taps into a skill we and other animals have of learning by watching others perform a task. During that time, brain imaging shows that we (or chimps) are mimicking the actions by firing the same neural networks as we would if actually moving. Sometimes we do a little of both, such as armchair quarterbacking.

On another order of things, heightened physical performance may also be traced to entering something akin to game mode. That is, for those who videogame, that flow that occurs somewhere deep in a challenging game in which a very much more difficult section is introduced, and you pass it, or nearly so, but then if you try again, you are hopeless. To wit, when motor neurons and perception are allowed to link, while learned heuristics and not conscious effort is allowed to be in command, voilá. Also why you might indeed pass that hard part the next day on first try, as new heuristics have been burned in during sleep. ETA: This does support a rational variation on the "magical" skills exhibited by a character in the film "A Spiritual Warrior", played by Nick Nolte. To wit, his catching thrown items with seeming little effort can be done when and if one can induce "game mode"; getting out of the way of your conscious brain. It is also an objective in martial arts.

I have long thought that it was in fact a major driver of evolution as well.

I once read a book that noted that the growth of the human head was very dramatic, in evolutionary terms. The size of the head grew very, very, fast. In fact, it grew faster than vaginas, resulting in humans having a very high rate of death during childbirth. That's a major evolutionary disadvantage, and yet, apparently, it was "worth it", i.e. the evolutionary advantage of increased intelligence more than offset the disadvantage of increased deaths in childbirth, including many deaths of infants in the process as well.

The author wondered what could have happened that made such evolutionary speed necessary. Why did those early hominids have to evolve such intelligence? If they were generally successful out there on the savanna, why did they need such an innovation? Obviously, being "smart" made it more likely the proto-humans would survive, but such dramatically fast evolution should only occur if there was a lot of evolutionary pressure. What changed?

I think the answer is that humans started killing each other. Once weapons came into use, it wasn't about brute strength. Coordination, communications between allies to make coordinated attacks, fashioning new and better weapons. Maybe almost all of our ancestors were smart enough to survive against the lions and crocodiles, but only the best tribes would survive when fighting each other.

And innovation was a big deal for that. If someone came up with a new and better way to make a sharper spear, he was a lot more likely to pass on his genes than the dull speared guy in the next village.

Not even village. Any clan big enough to divide. Competition at any level, though offset by pressure to cooperate as well.

Leading over time to organization beyond the pack level, to whatever comes after packs.

The topic of imagination and creativity is pretty broad. It can fit into several categories. I'm not even sure why I put it in R&P except that I may have been influenced by previous conversations about dualism.
