I actually clicked through and read the article expecting a anti-semitic rant since the thread was basically going on like it was.

If Kagan is confirmed, the Court will consist of three Jews and six Catholics (who represent not quite a fourth of the country), but not a single Protestant, though Protestants remain half the nation and our founding faith.

Buchanan isn't slaying the democracts for appointing jews, he actually talks about the overall uniformity of the bench. He also talks about how those people were actually chosen for other diversities (being female, or italian, etc, etc).

He then talks about the uniformity of education among the justices.

While it isn't a compelling piece in any way that I see from reading, and certainly never manages to have a point, it neither reinforces the idea that Buchanan is an anti-semite.

Perhaps the thread should be deleted to reduce the FAIL percent on the forum.....

Mongolia is a long way away from most people these days. People prefer to hate groups close to them and those who can be identified as different. The Romani for example. In many ways anti-semitism gets the most attention because it is fairly widespread (every europe derived culture has at least some jews living there to hate) and there are people out these who will draw attention to it. The constant low level hate aimed at the Romani largly gets ignored.

1)Random chance(I haven't calculated, but I would guestimate that the probablity of such a disproportion resulting from random chance is less then 5%)
2)Some quality which suits individuals to be on the Supreme Court is disproportianately present in the Jewish community to a truly incredible degree.
3)Institutional determinism makes Jews more likely to be nominated, to a degree unwarranted but nonetheless accidental
4)Deliberate discrimination in favour of Jews by Democrats.


Needless to say both 1 and 4 are incredibly unlikely, which means either/both 2 or 3 is the cause. It is not anti-semitic to ask what the disporportianate quality or institutional cause is, to the contrary it is quite intriguing.

I'm at a loss, as I know barely anything about the Jewish community or culture. Anyone else willing to venture any theories?

Jews are one of the most reliable and important constituencies of the Democratic Party. They also tend to be affluent and well-educated (ivy league schooling, post-grad work); I'm sure that if we look at the number of Supreme Court clerks, a high percentage of them will be Jewish.

As for Catholics, I think they're chosen because of Republican fears on Roe. There is also a sense of social justice, which makes them acceptable Democrats. I think Gingrich and Novak converted to Catholicism. Any other prominent Republicans? C. Thomas re-converted in the 90s.

Jews are one of the most reliable and important constituencies of the Democratic Party. They also tend to be affluent and well-educated (ivy league schooling, post-grad work); I'm sure that if we look at the number of Supreme Court clerks, a high percentage of them will be Jewish.

Not to mention that their entire religious practice is centered on the concept of law and legal interpretation. I had known this for a long time, but it wasn't until I married a Jew and kinda sorta became Jewish that I began to understand how thoroughly it pervaded Jewish life. The religion teaches people to become lawyers.
