Can Lanford See Through Metal?

The Tests

An amazing series of psychic tests were completed in June of this year at a quiet location in the suburbs of Des Moines, Iowa. The subject of these tests, who uses the nom-de-guerre of “Lanford”, was able to accurately perceive printed shapes that had been covered by quarter-inch-thick sheets of steel plating. We are excited to report the details of the “Lanford Experiments” to our registered readers.

Who is “Lanford”?

Lanford is something of a mystery. Nondescript in appearance, Lanford is a man of middle age, possibly about 40, slightly balding, mildly overweight, standing about 5' 6”. As you can see, Lanford has one of those “common” faces; friendly, but unremarkable. Lanford favors earth-tones in his clothing, wears a Rolex, drives a late-model Volvo, and, as he puts it, “Owns two-and-a-half cats and half a dog.” Other than that, Lanford would reveal no details about himself, not even his real name.

“Lanford”

There is also his astounding ability to see through metal as if it were glass.

The Locale

Our experiments were conducted in a wonderfully appointed new home in Pleasant Hill. Lanford had insisted upon a quiet venue; we consulted our guides and an address was revealed to us. On investigating, we discovered that the address was a newer home which the owners had just put on the rental market. Needless to say our little committee quickly made arrangements to see the house with Lanford in tow. Lanford was quite happy with the house and the matter was settled.

The house in Pleasant Hill

We rented the house for a period of six weeks. The first two weeks were spent attuning the house and generally cleansing it of any negative energies. Although it was a relatively new home people had been living in it and precautions needed to be taken in order to provide a neutral environment for the experiments.

We were guided to focus on the dining room as the proper setting for testing. All plants and floor lamps were removed as well as extra furniture, leaving only the dining room table and chairs. As you can see, the result was somewhat Spartan, but that had been our goal.

Experimental Preparation
At last we were ready to test Lanford. Keeping in mind that many people do not believe in the special abilities we all practice, we took steps to assure that our tests would be as thorough as possible giving Lanford no chance to cheat. As you know, we test everyone who is invited to join our society and Lanford was no exception. Given the nature of these abilities we always take careful precautions to prevent psychic access or even physical access to test materials.

Keys to the house and the test materials were kept in a safe deposit box. Only two of us had access to the safe deposit box. Both were required to be present when the other opened the box. The bank had been instructed to refuse access to either person if the other person was not present.

We set out the materials the night before Lanford was to arrive. These materials were:

The materials

Two new decks of playing cards.

10 opaque black envelopes.

10 rectangular plates of 1/4” thick steel.

Digital video recorder.

Digital camera.

We set up the digital video recorder and the digital camera. Each stage of the preparation was photographed in order to preserve a record of the procedure which we could check for any sleight of hand. We are all trustworthy but having a truly impartial watchful eye in the form of technology helps to keep everyone careful of details.

After closing the blinds we thoroughly shuffled one deck of cards, leaving the other deck sealed and unopened. Each playing card was placed in one opaque black envelope. These envelopes were then shuffled. Ten envelopes were selected at random. Each envelope was placed in a row on the dining room table. Each envelope was then covered by one steel plate. At this time we turned off the digital video recorder, taking it and the digital camera with us when we left the room, which we locked behind us. The digital video recorder and the digital camera were taken to the bank and locked in the safe deposit box.

Lanford Sees Through Metal

In the morning all of us were anxious for Lanford's arrival. Our lieutenants retrieved the digital video recorder and digital camera from the safe deposit box and we all met at the house. There we unlocked the dining room and found that nothing had been disturbed. No sooner had we set up the digital video recorder and digital camera than Lanford knocked on the front door of the house. He apologized for his early arrival but said that he'd had “the jitters” and wanted to get started as soon as possible. Fortunately we were ready for him to begin. We all entered the dining room where the tests would soon begin.

Lanford was given the sealed, unopened deck of playing cards. His task was to discern the playing card hidden below each steel plate and select its duplicate from the unopened deck and place it face up above each plate.

Lanford selects the cards

One by one, Lanford examined each place without touching anything except the deck of cards in his hands. Slowly selecting each card in turn, Lanford stopped at each plate and placed a card at each position until all ten plates had a card.

In keeping with our agreements, Lanford then left with one of our committee, who drove him to another location while we examined the results.

The Results

Here are the incredible results of the first experiment:

Plate 1: Queen of Diamonds Lanford: Queen of Diamonds

Plate 2: Five of Clubs Lanford: Four of Clubs

Plate 3: Ace of Diamonds Lanford: Ace of Diamonds

Plate 4: Eight of Spades Lanford: Eight of Spades

Plate 5: Jack of Hearts Lanford: Jack of Hearts

Plate 6: Six of Hearts Lanford: Four of Hearts

Plate 7: Ten of Clubs Lanford: Ten of Clubs

Plate 8: Joker Lanford: Joker

Plate 9: Seven of Diamonds Lanford: Seven of Hearts

Plate 10: King of Spades Lanford: King of Spades

Seven clear hits out of ten, with three very close hits, close enough to be virtually identical. When asked how he was able to “see” the hidden cards, Lanford told us that when he concentrates, “the metal just turns to glass”. When we asked him how he could see through the opaque envelopes, Lanford said, “I didn't notice envelopes at all.” We asked Lanford why there had been three misses, even though the cards he had chosen were extremely similar to the originals. According to Lanford, “Sometimes there's interference. If I get negative energies the glass effects get cloudy, you know, as if someone breathed on it and fogged the glass.”

We repeated the experiment once each day for the remaining four weeks. As you can see in this graph, Lanford's hit rate remained consistently high throughout the test period, at times hitting 10 for 10.

This chart shows Lanford's scores

Summary

We feel the results of these tests are truly astounding. Although we have urged Lanford to go public with his remarkable ability, he has said that he is content to remain a private member of our society and does not want publicity. As he so wisely puts it, “These little tricks are unimportant. They're just side effects. What matters isn't seeing playing cards. What matters is what we see in the human soul.”

None of your links or pictures are working (for me at least).

First time posters with wild stories are a dime a dozen here. You will get the same reception as everyone else that presents a story like this...

If "Lanford" is interested in displaying his powers and making a cool million, then let him apply for the JREF prize. Anecdotes aren't what we are looking for.

Bring on the EVIDENCE!

Perhaps Nolan will repost after reading the Forum Help section to learn about posting links.

I find nothing new here. It's a generic claim. A great deal of time and expense appears to have been wasted to no purpose. Meanwhile, perhaps "Lanford" would care to either do something useful with his ability, or win the JREF challenge and give the money to a charity who can do something useful with that.

As card tricks go, that one's pretty lame. Institute a few controls to deter trickery, and the "miracle" is unlikely to occur.

Errm, who are you Nolan?

Who is 'we'?

Who are your "registered readers"?

What are your qualifications to be able to conduct and perform experiments (obviously you are unaware of the "double-blind" protocol?

Is there anywhere we can read about these experiments other than your post above (a search of Google comes up blank).

Based on one post on an internet forum we would have to conclude that you have just made all this up.

I am a private individual associated with the group that tested "Lanford". I am interested in your comments as regards the experimental protocol as I am unconvinced of no errors.

You would not find anything on Google as the information is not publicly available. Sorry but I can't tell the source.

It is very easy to amaze a spectator with a simple magic trick, in which the spectator is utterly convinced that he was a good observer and that there was no way (other than supernatural means) that the performer could have been able to do what he did. Some pretty smart people ended up with egg on their faces because they concluded that a simple trick was some sort of miracle.

If you start with the assumption that this was a trick, then you should enlist the assistance of a magician to help you with your controls. There are literally dozens of techniques for reading the contents of sealed envelopes or determining the contents of hidden messages. Some of these techniques require little or no special skill.

The report does not even come close to suggesting what controls may have been needed or what controls (if any) were actually put in place.

"We are all trustworthy" means nothing. You set up the experiment so it shouldn't matter whether you are or not.

You set up the experiment, left it unobserved overnight and then went back in the morning to do the test.
And you ask if we can spot any errors in the protocol?

Uh, yes.

You are certainly correct to be "unconvinced of no errors"

Keeping the keys in the bank safety deposit box is pretty irrelevant if someone, say, ooh, a profesional magician or locksmith, can pick locks.

It sounds like a pretty amateur set up as an experiment and Lanford has done nothing a magician could not do (in several different ways I would imagine).

That's if we even believe any of this happened, which, without sources or references, we have no way of knowing.

If you really want to test Langford, you should test his claims and abilities, but with your own set up - you don't let him dictate the protocol to be such that cheating is allowed.
You have allowed the possibility of cheating with your set up and it would be conclusive of absolutely nothing if it was a real experiment.

Damn the million bucks --- why sweat the small stuff?

This guy should be in Vegas.

Nolan,

It is a quite expensive test that you have conducted when you rent a house and use a lot of work on it. I am sure you have done anything you could think of to determine if this claim was real.

You have already been reminded that this procedure was not double blind, so you have already a possible modus operandi. What also spring in mind is that this sounds like a normal conjuring trick, and it might help you to consult an experienced magician to eliminate the possibility of fraud.

It would also be interesting to know if Lanford was ever left alone, or if you can be absolutely sure that he was unacquainted with everyone present.

How did you arrive at the test procedure? Had Lanford told you the size of the steel plates, where to put them and so on? Did Lanford ask for steel plates or was it your own idea?

If you are satisfied with the test procedure, I am sure that you have already thought of applying for Randi's million. It would certainly be worth a try. My bet is that Lanford will not be interested, but it is worth a try.

In your test description, I think one can see some bias in favor of Lanford. You say that "many people do not believe in the special abilities we all practice". This could mean that your group very much would like to see Lanford succeed, which is OK, but it is worth keeping in mind, when looking for possible trickery.

As far as I can gather, there are only 10 cards in your deck (you mention one card in each black envelope, and there are 10 envelopes), so it is surprising that you focus on Lanford's misses as being near misses. Out of only ten cards, there are not so many possibilities.

Finally, you quote Lanford as saying

These little tricks are unimportant. They're just side effects. What matters isn't seeing playing cards. What matters is what we see in the human soul.
How true, but is he also claiming that he can read human souls, whatever they are? I believe there is a great dela of difference between reading a soul and seeing a playing card behind a steel plate.

I, too, am unconvinced of no errors...

It all sounds much too elaborate..

Why the rented house?

Why film the setup and then wait overnight to test?

Are cards the only thing Mr. Lanford can see through steel plates?

Why steel plates?

Why the second deck?

The list goes on and on and on and on.........

You are on to something there. Don't forget the "locked" dining room! And the need for a quiet venue. (If you really want a quiet venue, there are a lot quieter places nearby than Pleasant Hill.) And why did it take two whole weeks to attune the house and generally cleanse it of any negative energies?

Not only that, but such elaborate measures...

but name of the group? Sorry...it's a secret!
Name of the guy? Nope, sorry it's a secret!
Location of the article originally? Nope, it's a secret!

We see information that the house is "wonderfully appointed", details which have absolutely no bearing on the testing, and merely is a storytelling method. You describe the type of clothing the test subject prefers, again no bearing of merit...other than in storytelling. Minor personal embellishments which are seemingly designed to make the character seem more real.

And it's not even that interesting a story. Too many plot holes. :(

After all, when one goes through considerable time, and expense to conduct testing, and presents the results, it is highly suspect that they do not wish to present the evidence they claim have as well. Why would someone bother to do all those things at all, if they're not going to present it with the story?

And if the "metal turns to glass" how come he doesn't see the envelopes?

This story has more holes than a seive. And a fine seive for clay or something, not like a big one for vegetables.

Psiload can see through bulls$!t.

Psiload favors latex in his clothing.
