I'm curious, what examples are you familiar with?
Well, without getting into details (for legal reasons), I've known (so far) two polygynous families, one polyandrous family, and two 'attempts' at polyquad families personally, and been aware of several dozen other poly families. The culture is out there, tucked in neatly here and there, hidden behind all manner of facades.
Poly families seem to be prevalent among splinter-Mormons, some very odd Fundy Xians, and Pagans. In the case of Pagan Polys, it seems a natural extension of the fact that so many neo-Pagans are one breath away from being hippies anyway.
Perhaps there are possible arrangements where multiple partners could work, thus alleviating the financial part of it. I could certainly see the advantages of raising children in an environment with more adults, but that would also raise a lot of complications.
Well, the biggest problems I've seen with poly relationships have to do with ego, pride, and jealousy. If you can conquer these things, then any relationship you are in will work.
Now, in one case I am familiar with (a polygynous set-up), the two women work while the man cares for the kids. It is a singularly advantageous set-up, as the man is better with children than either woman, a better housekeeper and cook, and is probably the most feminine of the three of them. Each woman earns a decent amount, and financially, the household is fairly well off. Each woman, if she wants a child, schedules a time to do this specifically, and the other woman respects this schedule and takes every available precaution to prevent her own pregnancy.
However, this one case is clearly an exception, not a rule. The three rule the household equally, making rules together, decisions together, sharing almost everything. No one is a 'lesser' partner; no one is treated as a subordinate. It's a very rare relationship.
A polygamous relationship might be less that ideal for raising children, in that case. A one-man multiple wife setup is certainly a poor system from a genetic standpoint. You end up cutting diversity from other males while making sure that everyone is descended from an elite core of fathers.
Yes, but I think the global population is large enough now to set aside concerns about genetic diversity - and, for the male, it's clearly advantageous - two (or more) wives to bear his genes!
Besides - the other males can find their own nookie...
