Can someone help me figure out which side of this one I am on?

BOSTON, Massachusetts (Reuters) -- The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston on Tuesday demanded the removal of an animal rights group's billboard advertisement depicting the Virgin Mary cradling a lifeless chicken in her arms.

PETA v. The Catholic Church

Kinda like reading about Nazi Germany vs. Stalin's Soviet Union, or watching a Devils/Rangers Stanley Cup Semifinal back in the early nineties. You wind up rooting for causualties.

Well going simply on a turn by turn basis, I think the Catholics have had the most recent tough time explaining themselves for stupid actions, while PETA extremists seem to be getting away with more stupidity and false claims. So it's PETA's turn in the bullpin. Plus, Catholics have been working far less to convert me while PETA squads piss me off regularly.

I many need to cover my ass here in case The Fool pops in. I am in no way slamming vegans and vegetarians, nor do I think PETA represents them all. They merely represent the less functional of them.

Virgin birth has happened to animals. Why don't we worship turkeys?

Watch it there.................with the Bush "Turkeygate" scandal
that's recently devastated the country............you could find your door being knocked on by CIA, FBI, and ATF agents at the mere mention of the word "turkey".

Well, I don't know that this argument should be settled by previous instances of silliness on either party.

I think this case can be determined by looking at the merits of each side's arguments with respect to this specific circumstance.

Here it seems to me you have to balance the extremity of Peta's message and its overwrought histrionics against the Church's condemnation of anything they determine (by their own standards) to be profane.

In this case while I may not agree with Peta's message they are merely making a statement on a billboard, and pretty tame one at that. While the Church seeks to infringe on their free speech rights because they disagree with the message.

Gotta side with Peta's rights on this one.

Well you always have to side with rights. I'm looking more at method. While I fully agree PETA has the right to get their bogus messages across, it's they scare tactics and other methods that I feel are due for scrutiny. Most people are aware of the flaws of the Catholic Church and it's hurting their recruiting, PETA meanwhile is still suckering people into their folds. And to be honest they too condmen anything they determine to be profane, it's just that in this case it's eating anything they don't. Hell at least the Catholic Church is a little accepting of different religions, but PETA is not to understanding about different dietary indulgences.

Plus I see more PETA propoganda than Catholic and PETA has always been one of my pet peeves. ;) Suddenly want to know, granted, he asked in jest, which side to be on, I made a suggestion. The best thing to do would be let them fight it out themselves and the rest of us can get drunk at a BBQ followed by massive amounts of pre-marital sex while using birth control.

The church is always offended by everything. If you not showing Jesus and company in the greatest possible light then its blasphame.

I kinda like PETAS advertising. Its entertaining. i wish other organizations would follow their lead.

Imagine an NRA, 'What if Jesus had a gun" campaine.!!!

You have to think about it...

On the one hand, I'm appalled at what this would make a child think. On the other, I can appreciate a bad pun.

I'm torn.

Seriously, what are PETA's campaigns but shock and outrage? Marching nude in front of a fur store. Tying up traffic in Chicago by dropping a big banner across Lake Shore Drive. Painting childhood icons as murders. And now, limp Santa.

In advertising, I've long since learned that the more obnoxious the message, the less value found beneath the wrapper.

It seems to me that the perceived insult is directed to Mary, not Jesus.

The "Immaculate Conception" pertains to the purity of Mary, not to the conception of Jesus by the Virgin Mary. (The Catholic Church has recently been accused of "Mary worship," elevating Mary to a position higher than Christ.) Whether Jesus is present or not, the billboard casts Mary in an unfavorable light.

Woah! Was I sick that day?!?!?

When did this happen?

Links?

A suspicion:

The more I hear from PETA the less interested I am in their message... I am forced to draw one of two conclusions:

1. Whoever is in charge of their public image is insane, incompetent, or both.

or

2. the organization has been taken over by individuals who have decided they want to destroy the stated goals of the movement from within.

I swear, they're so obnoxious they make me embarassed when I even speak up about animal rights.

This has got to stop.

They can keep the naked celebrity/anti-fur thing, that one's OK with me. :)

Well it depends on the naked celeb. I mean what if they went all Rosanne Barr here?
