The Historical Jesus II

...If neither Paul nor any gospel writers ever met Jesus, and if nobody in the gospels or letters ever wrote to make a credible claim of meeting Jesus, then at very best all you can possibly be left with are fanatical religious beliefs in as spiritual heavenly messiah...

Why can't say what is written in the writings of antiquity instead of repeating the opinion of 21st century Scholars?

The writings of antiquity do state that the Transfiguring water walking Son of the Ghost, the Lord from heaven, God of God was in Jerusalem with Satan and the Jesus was KILLED or caused to be killed by the Jews after a trial under the Sanhedrin and Pilate.

Please do not invent sub-lunar stories for which there is no evidence in or our the Bible.

The historical Jesus and sub-lunar Jesus are modern myths.

There was NEVER any historical data for Jesus of Nazareth and no myth fable that Jesus was crucified in the sub-lunar.

Virtually all Christian writers of antiquity who mentioned the death of Jesus, the Lord from heaven, God's Own Son, claimed he was KILLED or caused to be killed by Jews.

Jesus of Nazareth NEVER had any historical data and that is why Christians were able to SUCCESSFULLY argue that Jesus was born of a Ghost WITHOUT a human father for hundreds of years and even before the Roman Government conceded.

dejudge, what on earth does that have to do with whether or not early NT texts refer to Hell?

Craig B what on earth does the mention of Hell has to do with evidence from antiquity for an historical Jesus?

Let us not divert from the issue.

You have been asked MULTIPLE times to present evidence for an historical Jesus and evidence from antiquity that there are authentic Pauline letters composed c 50-60 CE and have failed to do so.

Now, you want to talk about Hell.

Hell does not exist just like Jesus, Satan and Paul.

It's you who have to tell me that, since it was you who brought Hell into this discussion, if I may express myself in these terms. Anyway you wrote this.
We already know that most of the so-called Scholars who promote the HJ arguments are CHRISTIANS who MUST say Jesus existed or else GOD will BURN them with everlasting fire in Hell.
So I'm discussing the status within Christianity of the doctrine of eternal damnation which you have brought to our attention.

We continue to steer away from any attempt to show any evidence of Jesus (see footnote).

Where is the evidence of a human Jesus ever known to anyone?

If neither Paul nor any gospel writers ever met Jesus, and if nobody in the gospels or letters ever wrote to make a credible claim of meeting Jesus, then at very best all you can possibly be left with are fanatical religious beliefs in as spiritual heavenly messiah.

So where is the evidence of Jesus?

Footnote - for the last 20 pages or so, this thread seems to have abandoned all further attempts at ever producing any evidence of a human Jesus known to anyone in the 1st century (or at any time). And that’s what this thread and it’s parent threads were supposed to be about ... HJ posters were supposed to be producing evidence of Jesus. Now all the HJ posts have descended into a talking shop for every conceivable topic in Christian biblical belief, except for any attempt at all to produce evidence of Jesus.

Well this is a merged thread but as I pointed out is the "evidence" is the effectively the same 'usual suspects' it has nearly always been: Paul; canonal Gospels, Josephus, Pliny the Younger, Tacitus, Suetonius, and on particularly bad days Talmud and Thallus

Sure some times you get Irenaeus throw in the mix but all he really brings to the table is evidence of Paul and the Gospels sometime before 180 and a lot of propaganda. Sometimes the DSS come up but there are no agreed to reference to Jesus there (some parts are said to be Gospels but that is debated) Everything else is so late as not to even be worth mentioning.

Scott Oser's Historicity Of Jesus FAQ (1994) went over the standard non-Christian evidence and the basic arguments against them that the HJ crowd seems to ignore again and again. Carrier and Price added a few more elements but more or less the counters are the same ones Remsburg brought up over 100 years ago.

Josephus - the Testimonium Flavian has a clear Christian hand and baed on several factors it seems safe to assume the whole paragraph was inserted later. The efforts to salvage something out of the Testimonium Flavian all ignore the thing breaks the narrative flow. The James brother of Christ is iffier but all early Christian works has James the Just dying c 69 not the 62 CE presented here so odds are that is likely tinkered with.

Pliny the Younger - The old existed of movement proves existence of Creator nonsense. Things like Ned Ludd and the Luddites and the various Melanesian Cargo cult kick that in the head.

Suetonius at best shows the existence of Christians in Rome in the time of Nero and given neither Josephus of Pliny the Elder (at least what the Christians bothered to preserve) who were in Rome at the right time say anything so that is iffy.

Tacitus - oldest copy has been tampered with and based on what we know even if entirely genuine he seems to just be repeating what Christians believed. The HJ crowd also like to ignore the fact that the the period of middle 29 to middle 31 has been cut from the Annals in a manner too precise to assume this is just a chance coincidence

The Talmud is so late it is hard to understand why it is even used as evidence. Never mind that the person most commonly identified as Jesus in it is a century too early.

Thallus is the biggest joke in terms of evidence. Supposedly the work ends with the 167th Olympiad (ie 109 BC). And the supposed reference comes from George Syncellus (d 810) referencing Sextus Julius Africanus (c. 160 – c. 240). The gyrations to get this to qualify as evidence are :jaw-dropp  with some good old :hb: throw in as some icing. How any scholar can present this as evidence is beyond me.

This leaves us Paul with his visionary Jesus and the Gospels written by who knows who sometime between 70 and 140 CE and do history as well as a one legged man in a butt kicking contest.

And Ehrman says those challenge this weak evidence are on par with "people out there who don’t think the Holocaust happened, there wasn’t a lone JFK assassin and Obama wasn’t born in the U.S"?! SAY WHAT?!?

Readers deserve to be reminded that Ehrman, like most other scholars, accepts the existence of HJ. Perhaps we can explore why.

That sounds a bit too much like education... Surely all that needs to be done to settle this question is to repeat over and over again "There is no credible, reliable, objective evidence for anyone ever meeting a living Jesus"... Therefore Jesus must have been an apparition...

Obviously all the real people who ever existed in the ancient world left such evidence behind...

All we need to do is find an ancient scroll that says "I met Jesus and he was a great bloke..." and the matter will be settled for all time.

Why bother with all that tedious critical textual analysis, when we can just accept things at face value? 3rd century Christians said Jesus was God, therefore we know he didn't exist, right?

(Yes that was sarcasm, sorry)

We already found out "why", because he (Ehrman) just wrote a complete book about it in 2013.

And what we found out from that book is - the evidence which Ehrman thinks is so fantastic as to make Jesus what he called a "certainty", is that in the bible it says that Paul met Jesus' brother ... and in his various interviews since writing that book (all on YouTube) he has said of that "you would think his own brother would have known if Jesus wasn't real" ... hence he says that proves he must have "certainly" "definitely" been real!

That's the quality of evidential analysis that you are relying upon with even the most celebrated and respected of academic bible scholars (Ehrman is actually is one of the most respected in the world in this HJ field).

His only other piece of supposedly "convincing" evidence, is something he himself described as "too complicated to be explained to the audience" when he gave a 20 min. talk at a book signing for the launch of that book (from memory that evidence was to say something along the lines of "certain parts of biblical texts made better sense if translated from Hebrew rather than from the Greek which appears in the extant copies" ... that's supposed to indicate knowledge of Jesus).

Meanwhile you are quite happy to accept Carrier's idea of Paul teaching that god made a sub-lunar messiah out of David's sperm up in the sky, based on nothing more than Paul's use of one particular word...

Yeah, that seems much more likely...

It's you who have to tell me that, since it was you who brought Hell into this discussion, if I may express myself in these terms.

The vast majority of people who claim Jesus existed are Christians and Christians Scholars.

Go to any major University and you will see Christian Scholars praying to Jesus in the CHAPELS to go to heaven.

Christians MUST tell people that Jesus existed because if they do NOT they will be DENIED before God in heaven.

Examine the teachings of the Church which is preached in UNIVERSITY Chapels

Matthew 10:33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.

Mark 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

Christians and Christians Scholars MUST believe and teach People that Jesus existed or else they SHALL be DAMNED.

In that case it's perfectly relevant to discuss Hell in this thread, and what you have written already is therefore balderdash!

Readers deserve to be reminded that Ehrman, like most Christians, accepts the Christian Bible as a great book or a great set of books.

Readers deserve to be reminded that Ehrman LOVES the Bible.

See page 36 of Bart Ehrman's "Did Jesus Exist?".

Readers deserve to be reminded that Ehrman admited that the NT accounts of Jesus are filled with discrepancies and contradictions and that the Gospels are riddled with historical problems and events which most likely did not happen.

See page 182-184 of Bart Ehrman's "Did Jesus Exist?"

Bart Ehrman discredited his own sources but turned around and use them as credible historical sources.

Bart Ehrman's argument for an HJ is the very worst kind of argument.

Bart Ehrman's HJ argument is based DIRECTLY on ADMITTED sources of fiction, falsehood, forgery, and false attribution.

As you please. The only serious group you name is the Unitarians, and I don't really regard them as Christians. What the modern ones think of themselves I'm not sure. I quite like them, but they don't have anything resembling a Christian definition of Jesus. I do NOT regard Mormons as Christians, and I think their self definition as Christians is simply the result of the influence of the environment in which they exist. In any event their "Christology" is not typically Christian. We should not look to these groups to determine what we mean by a "Christian Jesus".

What did you just say???

Behold Craig B the "Non-typical Christian POPE"

Please, non-believer, tell us which Christians will go to heaven?

Now, if people of antiquity were called Christians and there many different cults of Christian how can you determine if the single mention of the word "Christians" refers to "typical Christians"?

But how do you explain the Jewish Scholars who teach about HJ? There's plenty of them dejudge. They don't believe they'll go to hell for denying the existence of Jesus, so why do they teach that Jesus probably existed?

The same way you would explain how Jews teach about the existence of their God.

Why do the Jews teach that their God probably existed when there is no evidence to support such a claim?

Maybe you can't answer the first question but surely you can answer this.

Why do you accept the words of an admitted liar and con-man called Paul without corroboration?

By the way, the Jews have a history of believing in myth characters who did NOT ever exist.

Why do you accept the words of an admitted liar and con-man called Paul without corroboration?

Because, perhaps, lacking corroboration, he was a more skillful and persuasive liar than you?

Or perhaps because the things I think Paul is lying about are not the things that I believe...

I think Paul told the truth when he said that there were other Apostles, because his audience already knew about them. When Paul speaks of "James, the Lord's brother" he is talking about someone his audience already knew as a "Pillar of the Church" in Jerusalem.

When Paul talks about receiving a "revelation" of Jesus however, I'm more inclined to think he lies. I also think that others contested his right to be considered an Apostle just because he said he had a vision:
http://www.ccel.org/ccel/schaff/anf08.vi.iii.vi.xxxv.html
“Wherefore observe the greatest caution, that you believe no teacher, unless he bring from Jerusalem the testimonial of James the Lord’s brother, or of whosoever may come after him.746 For no one, unless he has gone up thither, and there has been approved as a fit and faithful teacher for preaching the word of Christ,—unless, I say, he brings a testimonial thence, is by any means to be received. But let neither prophet nor apostle be looked for by you at this time, besides us..."

Paul didn't have a testimonial from James, in fact he only had bad things to say about James and his gang of circumcisers...

Can someone please pull Brainache aside and quietly tell him that his approach to the HJ argument is void of logic.

In this thread, he constantly plays the "numbers" game claiming [erroneously] there is a consensus for HJ and that hardly any historians and Scholars argue for a mythological Jesus.

Brainache attempts to argue that whatever "Plenty people" believe about Jesus is likely true.

But in another thread, he puts forward the notion that Paul was an Herodian which CONTRADICTS his PLENTY PEOPLE argument for an HJ in this thread.

Brainache should have realised YEARS ago that he had DESTROYED his PLENTY PEOPLE argument for an HJ when he put forward the idea that Paul was Herodian which is Fringe of Fringe of Fringe of Fringe.............Fringe.

Maybe in the whole world one or two persons imagine that Paul was an Herodian and do so without evidence from antiquity.

Brainache has shown that an hypothesis does NOT require PLENTY People.

But, Brainache has not realised that an hypthesis NEEDS PLENTY data.

In the HJ thread, Brainache uses the PLENTY People argument WITHOUT historical data.

In Paul the Herodian, Brainache WITHDRAWS the PLENTY People argument but still provides ZERO historical data.

It is clear proof that Brainache has never understood that an hypothesis NEEDS data--NOT people.

This is the evidence from antiquity about Jesus-----This is some of the DATA for Jesus of Nazareth.

Mark 6. 48---about the fourth watch of the night, He came unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them.

Mark 9:2 --And after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John, and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves: and he was transfigured before them.

1 Corinthians 15:47-- The first man is of the earth, earthy; the second man is the Lord from heaven

PLENTY DATA TRUMPS Plenty people.

Jesus of Nazareth is a figure of mythology based on PLENTY MYTH DATA.

Someone needs to pull Brainache aside and tell him to WITHDRAW his PLENTY PEOPLE HJ argument like he did in the thread about Paul the Herodian.

It is does not logically follow that Jesus was a figure of history because PLENTY People believe so WITHOUT evidence.

There is no logic in your post.

I don't claim that HJ is true because there is a consensus of Scholars. I'm just saying that there is a consensus and the fact that one or two fringe theories exist, isn't proof that there is no consensus.

I acknowledge that Paul as a member of the Herodian family is not a widely held opinion, but it is an idea which fits the evidence as I understand it.

You can disagree all you like, but the arguments you use to do so are idiotic and totally unconvincing. Please keep using them...
