The Gospel

Have you ever really asked yourself where you want to spend eternity?

Self... hello, self?

Um, yeah?

Where do you want to spend eternity?

Er, Schenectady good for you?

Works for me. Thanks, self.

Anytime, man. Oh, if you go to the store today, get us some beer, will ya? We're low.

You got it.

So Miss. Kitty, what in your own personal experience tells you that people are “offended” by the gospel?
Have you for example, been prevented from reading a bible in public?

I myself turned from my pagan beliefs and God's peace is obvious! I have never known so much inner peace as I have now.

Well, whatever turns your crank, I'm sure. But what's obvious to you is not obvious to others. Me, I've been far more at peace since I dropped Xianity.

(And in my experience, it's the people who go on and on about how much at peace they are, who are the ones least secure in their faith. Just sayin'.)

The spirit clearly says in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.

Right. Because that's never happened before. There have never been people abandoning the faith (any faith). There have never been fearful religious conservatives ranting about deceiving spirits and demons.

I am glad to know the truth now, and feel free from that which was my pagan past. Wish I could tell Ya, but only he can open your eyes. That's what he did for me and many others too!

So what are you doing here? Seriously, if it's all up to God or the Holy Spirit or whoever, why don't you leave it up to them, let them open our eyes?

Have you ever really asked yourself where you want to spend eternity? Hell will not be a party guys!

And are you okay with this? Are you okay with God condemning a majority of humankind to eternal torture? I realize you believe you're headed to the land of haloes and harps and hosannas, but what about the rest of us poor schmucks who have never had our eyes opened? Through no fault of our own, it's the eternal barbecue pit for us. Does this seem like a fair way to run a universe? If you had the power would you send even one person to eternal agony?

Want? In Allah's heaven with 72 houris.
Will? In a box in the ground, just like you.

The question is meaningless, because "eternity" is as mythic a concept as "sin" or "god." Even the little maths I can comprehend says that time is finite.

And even if there were such a thing as "always", I wouldn't want to spend it doing and seeing the same things over and over. So any "heaven" would be lacking, and a lot of the things I'd want to try, given immortality and unlimited resources, are the sorts of things your "god" doesn't seem to care for.

Sorry, no sale.

Did you really think no one had come prattling this babytalk around here before? Grow up.

We are told he is not willing that any should perish and hopes all will come to believe in what he did on the cross and repent. If we believe and call on him he is faithful to save us. But it takes a open mind , heart, and childlike faith!
Faith comes by hearing the word of God. People read all kinds of books that smart men have wrote , so why question the inspired word of God? The Bible
In fact the more I read the more I know he is true to his word. His spirit bears witness with mine to reveal his truth, AWESOME!

Why are so many Christians offended when people point out the errors, contradictions, illogic and immorality depicted in the Gospels?
I'm agnostic, but even I find offensive the frequently appalling level of reasoning and comprehension people have been known to bring to such efforts (viz. The Skeptic's Annotated Bible).

Then what does anyone have to worry about? Surely if an omnipotent being isn't willing for me to perish, I'm on pretty secure ground.

Palimpest asks a good question. Why did you chose to sign up for this particular forum, knowing (I suppose) that it is a skeptical crowd you'd be hanging with? Did you seriously think that a few threads (including this one which started with a non-question) from you and we'd all be running for the nearest church? I assume you did not come here engage in philosophical or logical debate about god or Christianity or religion because you have merely swooned to us about how special you are that god loves you and how the rest of us heathens are headed for hellfire.

Really, it is a serious question. What motivated you to come here, what do you hope to learn (the E in JREF), and what - if any - knowledge do you hope to contribute to our education?

What about people who never heard the story? It took centuries for Xian missionaries to reach the Far East; almost a millenium and a half to reach the Americas. What happened to these people? Did God just "hope" they'd come to believe in the crucifixion story even though he knew they couldn't, since they never had the chance to hear it?

If we believe and call on him he is faithful to save us.

And if we don't call on him... then what? Does God need us to call on him to do anything?

Faith comes by hearing the word of God. People read all kinds of books that smart men have wrote , so why question the inspired word of God? The Bible

Why not question it?

Choosing to live a life of faith is definately a road less traveled.

Actually, it's rather popular. I am amazed christians think they are oppressed. You are the bloody majority in the US.

Have you ever really asked yourself where you want to spend eternity? Hell will not be a party guys!

Actually, from descriptions I've read, it's at the very least amusing. But to answer the question, I'd prefer to spend eternity on a yacht on Lake Michigan.

He changed me and my life for the better. I just wish you could know how awesome he is!

You've repeatedly made that abundantly clear. Too bad you don't see how awesome it is to not believe fiction.

As for your OP, why would you think something written by man (yes, the gospels were written by men) would be any less offensive than neo-nazi literature proclaiming God loves the "white race" above all? Anytime you start placing certain people above others in the name of God, you are offensive.

You talk alot about hellfire and damnation, but what you fail to see is that you are trying to be a good person under penalty of punishment from your God. I yearn to be a productive, caring member of society because I willingly choose to.

You probably don't see the distinction there.

I would question anything written by men (or women) as an appeal to authority without peer review and proper study.

Take note of this thread:

Blatant troll behavior.

However, if this troll wants to open a new thread, I see no problem in being amused by the preaching. That's merely my opnion though.

Oh, I don't mind the trolls much. I just like them better when they actually respond to others' posts. Otherwise, it's just like talking to a brick wall.

1inChrist, my favorite troll, was almost as much fun as having a barrel full of monkey poo at a Westboro Baptist meeting.
