The first commandment

I brought this witch thing up in the past also.
Since super natural powers are not real then all people whom have been killed for having them were in-fact innocent, god did'nt know this????????

In terms of witches huddled round a couldron making potions and flying on broomsticks I think you're correct, but in other cultures witches don't have to have supernatural powers and are more like tribal medicine men.

Also:
A member of the Wicca religion. A practitioner of witchcraft. There are many types and traditions of witches. A witch is not necessarily a Wiccan, though if a Wiccan practices witchcraft they can be called a witch.

Anyway I'm nitpicking, I know what you were getting at.

Is this an acknowledgment that there are other valid gods (within Judaism / Christianity) but that you can't worship them or that you can so long as you don't hold then in higher esteem than Yahweh? Or am I reading stuff that isn't there?

The Egyptian priests in Exodus make their sticks into serpents, which is supposedly due to their own gods' powers. So, I don't think the bibble, in the old testament, always claimed that there were no gods beside the Hebrew god.

Not always, anyway.

Me, it's the second commandment that bugs me:

You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

Crosses with Jesus on it, anywhere ?

That's one of the differences between between orthodox and catholic.

To an orthodox: 3D=statue=Idol=bad
2D=Icon=not idol=good

I think it means dog wants to have sex with you before the others get some. But I'm not a religions expert!

I't could be that god suffers some sort of multiple personality complex.

Not if you're a believer, then the "us" is simply a majestic "us" and not really a plural. Believers don't let such facts that you point out bother them.

This reminds me about Gollum.... :D

"Master loves us..."

If you want people to worship you... and you in particular... then I think it would behoove you to be visible, salient, and clear. But, hey, that's just me. How are supposed to know if you believe in the right invisible guy with the right name... how do you make yourself "believe"-- and "love"... or is it just about saying you do.

Sure it is, when you leave out my super de-lux question marks

But how do you know the right invisible guy is getting your telepathic love and belief proclamations? Or is there only one such entity? What if Satan intercepts and hogs your good feelings for the other dude?

No it's an acknowledgment that at that time many people (as they still do today) worshipped false gods, and not the one and only true God®.

The Gnostic sects of early Christianity came to the conclusion that the OT God was a rogue, an insane god who had broken away from the "real" gods....

Yeah - it really was the case that we ended up with the most boring lacklustre version of Christianity possible that survived - typical "design by committee" result!

According to mainstream Xianity, the "other gods" and "witches" are all in with Satan. Psychics, too. Actually, most of the stuff we call woo, they think is probably "real", just demonic in some way.
The Baptists think the Pentecostals and their "spirit babbling" is Satanic, and the Pentecostal think Catholics and their bleeding Mary statues and "Catholic-specific visions" are Satanic.

The Gnostic Yahweh thought he was the only God in existence. The other gods laughed at him.

I've always thought it would have been really fun if it turned out they had them - and they proved it just as the crowds started jeering and laughing.

FWIW, that's the second commandment as listed by Protestants. Catholics, who are the ones with the crucifixes, don't list that separately. The graven images are subsumed under "false gods". To round out the list to an even 10 they have two "covets".

Meanwhile, for Jews, the first commandment is "I am the Lord thy God". And the second commandment is "Thou shalt have no other gods before me". Graven images fall into commandment 2. And they aren't actually commandments, they are "statements" or "declarations". There are 613 "commandments".

Maybe they gave him a time-out, and that's why he hasn't been parting the sea and raising the dead and healing the sick and making the sun stand still lately.

On the plus side, we haven't had any of that "kill all the firstborn" nonsense for a while either...
