The End Times Are Here!

I disagree entirely, Codeblue

The Christians I have seen post here have been treated with respect, as far as I'm concerned. They have been asked a lot of hard questions which they failed to answer or merely ignored, but no one has ridiculed them. Unfortunately when you start to take Christianity to pieces, it does seem fairly ridiculous. But that's not the fault of atheists. No one has bashed Christians - merely questioned their beliefs.

As most of the people posting here are from countries whose governments purport to be acting in accordance with Christian principles, and as that is the religion that most of us were raised in, or around, of course that's the one we tend to focus on most. I don't know enought about Islam or Judaism, for example, (except to know that I don't believe in Allah or G_d either) to be able to discuss them in depth, where as because I am an ex-Christian whose early years were dominated by that religion, it's the one I focus on most; and I think that would be the same for many people here.

Asking the hard questions of Christianity is not the same as ridiculing it. If you want to discuss other religions; go right ahead.

Are you implying that you and those whom you speak for have only been exposed to Christian beliefs throughout your lives. You can't expect me to believe that "given" means only those whom you have encountered on this forum. Personal experiences have been refered to many times by others.

Christian beliefs are constantly the butt of jokes and the subject of sarcasim
on this "Religion & Philosophy" forum. How can you possibly expect a Christian, who wants to have an honest debate, to come in here and think he is going to be given any respect or taken seriously.

If all you wan't is to come here and agree with each others insults against a common enemy in order to make yourselves feel superior, WELL DONE!

If you wan't to debate with someone who's beliefs are different than your own, I suggest not constantly riddiculing what he believes in.
There are actually quite a few christians on this forum who are given great respect and taken very seriously.

The people who get ridiculed on this board are those whose standpoints are ridiculous, usually based on faulty logic or fanatical blind belief. The mission of the JREF, and by extension this board, is to get people to think critically and logically about what they believe and what they are told. If someone offers up an argument that they claim is based on logic and reasoning then they must expect to have their argument picked apart. If, after their argument has been shown to be erroneous, they come back and make the same claims with the same argument then they will be ridiculed. If you want an example just have a look at Lifegazer's extensive opus horribilis.

If someone says of their religious beliefs, "Well I believe this, but I have no reason other than a gut feeling and personal experience." then nobody here will ridicule them for it. At least, nobody who's worth talking to.

I have an entire thread here detailing my journey from born-again christian to atheist. I have many posts quite sympathetic to christians and to members of other religions, and at least one where I defend a very minority religion against christian attacks. My record speaks for itself.

We bash what we are given to bash. In this thread, and in others that you have apparently read, it has been bad logic that happens to come from a christian point of view. Have we only been exposed to christianity? Of course not. Look around and you will see all sorts of bad logic being bashed. In this culture, though, the majority of it will be associated with the majority belief system, and so it is not surprising that you will have seen more examples of bad-logic-bashing that is couched in christian terms.

Your name and your avitar gave you away.

When we look into the mind of God what do we see?
Something wonderful!

In the end times there will be signs in the heavens.

I looked at this on the 30th of Sept.

This might be terrible for the evil ones.

Including your own ... ;)
There is a lot of bad logic around. Sadly I contribute to it from time to time. Much more than I would like to. I try not to but it happens. I can honestly say that I don't remember Mercutio engaging in fallacy. He's human so it's not beyond him to make a mistake but I can say with confidence that it is by far the exception and not the rule, if at all.

Wow.

Thanks.

Aren't they always?

Yes, they are. I think that rumors that the world is coming to an end are even more prevalent with the internet and mass communication. What barely raised an eyebrow 50 years ago is brought into our homes daily so it's easy to point at "evidence" that the world is ending.

The cliché about the bearded homeless guy with the placard stating "THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END" walking through an unheeding public has never stopped someone from making the usual doomsday predictions.

As I said in the OP, Chicken Little
