The End Of Diet Soda???

All kinds of criticism all over the web. It was a paper presented at a conference so there is no study to read, just this summary:

“We only found an association, so we can’t say that diet drinks cause these problems,” Vyas said, adding that there may be other factors about people who drink more diet drinks that could explain the connection.

For a study that bills itself as the largest ever and notes thousands of subjects, I find this vague conclusion suggesting it wasn't a very carefully controlled comparison.

Correlation to cardio vascular problems does not mean causation. it could actually be the reverse causation : people which tend having cardio vascular problem (due to obesity for example) tend to drink more soda or switch to diet soda.

Also aspartame does not cause seizure. At least review have found no correlation.

"one of the most dangerous ingredients used in our food supply" unfounded statement.

And that's only the quoted paragraph.

I'd like a Whopper with large fries. And a diet coke.

Well yes. Aspartame is dangerous because Monsanto. :D

I should point out that aspartame isn't the only artificial sweetener used in diet drinks. My diet beverage of choice contains sucralose.

Me too, I can't drink hardly any soda with sugar in it. Coke Zero is #1 for me.

Joining the chorus, here. I drink diet sodas because I like them better than regular ones. Regular ones seem syrupy and sticky to me. I'm sure someone will find a new sweetener if necessary; diet sodas are too big of a business to let drop.

Am I the only one who likes the weird metallic aftertaste?

I think I heard somewhere that people have different taste buds (meaning they actually detect different molecules) and maybe that explains it, I don't know.

Personally, I hate it. I'd rather drink cold water if it's a choice between that and a diet soft drink.

I'm dieting and trying to cut out sweets and things but I must admit I have a diet soda 4 or 5 times a week. I should just drink water but I can't help myself.

I recall, that due to concerns about artificial sweeteners, that aspartame is one of the most studied food additives (maybe second to caffeine). I would want to see a solid, peer-reviewed study concluding it is harmful before I would be concerned.

Simple logic, while certainly not infallible, would suggest that if artificial sweeteners cause some kind of health problem we'd see it by now. How many years have they been used, 30? And millions of people ingest them.

Weight problems and 2+ litres a day of diet soda correlate strongly in my observation.

Disclaimer: Not hatin'... I speak as somewhat of a chubby chaser. :)

And, I agree... it doesn't need to cause cancer or whatever; aspartame does taste like ass.

Zevia!

Zero calorie soda sweetened with stevia (sweet leaf).
Makes a fool of your pancreas!

(This s not a paid endorsement.)

I wanted to like Zevia, but don't really.

You guys in the US at least have a nice range of diet stuff to pick from, Canada's a diet soda wasteland. Every so often a diet one will appear, but most of the time it disappears again within months. Brisk diet Iced Tea was the most recent one I liked that disappeared within months. Diet Mountain Dew stuck for some reason.

Even the companies don't know, I tried diet Stewart's Root Beer once in the US and liked it. Couldn't find any diet Stewart's in Canada (regular stuff was all over), so I contacted Stewart's to find out where it was sold in Canada and I was told they didn't even sell Stewart's in Canada at all... lol. Similar experience with diet Boylan sodas (though I did find those eventually).

Apparently it makes you younger and forces you to smoke! (joke):

On average, women who consumed two or more diet drinks a day were younger, more likely to be smokers, and had a higher prevalence of diabetes, high blood pressure, and higher body mass index.”

There does seem to be some disparity between industry funded papers and independent ones, how important these differences are depends on who you ask.
