The DeSantis gambit

De Santis was booed in Jacksonville Florida.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Hundreds of people gathered Sunday at prayer vigils and in church, in frustration and exhaustion, to mourn yet another racist attack in America: this one the killing of three Black people in Florida at the hands of a white, 21-year-old man who authorities say left behind white supremacist ramblings that read like “the diary of a madman.”

Following services earlier in the day, about 200 people showed up at a Sunday evening vigil a block from the Dollar General store in Jacksonville where officials said Ryan Palmeter opened fire Saturday using guns he bought legally despite a past involuntary commitment for a mental health exam.

Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis — who is running for the GOP nomination for president, who has loosened gun laws in Florida and who has antagonized civil rights leaders by deriding “wokeness “ — was loudly booed as he addressed the vigil.

His new board for reedy creak is apparently trying to sue the members of the old board for $2.5 million in "damages" to the State of Florida because Disney game them free season passes and a 20% discount on food and drink in the park.

To be fair, Disney's prior relationship with local government stinks like a rat, but it's hard to take any criticism seriously from DeSantis because his motivations are obviously corrupt.

I think you have your wires crossed. The only reference I find to $2.5 million is the amount that RCID spent in 2022 on tickets and other Disney perks.

"The CFTOD said in 2022 alone, RCID spent $2.5 million on discounts and tickets for employees and family members."

I don't believe that there's any lawsuit yet. And this isn't gifts from Disney. Disney didn't give those tickets away for free, they sold those tickets to RCID. This is improperly spent public funds. You aren't allowed to spend public funds for things like Disney tickets for employees. That's against the law.

And although that's not what happened, Disney giving those tickets to RCID as a gift would also be against the law. Public employees aren't allowed to accept large gifts (the limit is something like $25).

DeSantis isn't actually involved with this. The CFTOD found these illegal payments and employee benefits, and had to end them or else they would be guilty of criminal actions themselves. And given what they've uncovered, they really have no choice but to report it. This is major illegal activity, involving many millions of dollars in improperly spent public funds. Are they just supposed to look the other way?

Hurricane headed toward Florida. Wonder if Ronnie iwill stop campaignd long enough to do his job as Governor.

He already has. This is one case where he has nothing to lose and everything to gain by doing the right thing for a change. Governors usually get an approval boost after a storm.

Usually, but he turned his news conference into a campaign stop, with the heads of the state agencies involved all having to praise De Santis at length for being such a billiant leader.
He is clueless. He would have earned more political points by playing it straight rathern then turn it into a display of having his butt kissed.

De Santis back in full campaign mode as he urged property orders to shoot to kill to protect their property.
"You Loot, We Shoot" his exact words.
Note not "You will be caught and tried in a court of law" which would have been responsible warning agianst looting, but a call to take the law into your own hands.

He is giving carte blanche for already highly stressed home-owners to shoot first, ask questions later. So the first medical responder, fireman, policeman, or concerned neighbour's child to get shot will make this seem even more stupid than it already is. And will start a round of urban warfare.

Back when Stubby McBonespurs was first elected as president, I started a thread covering examples of people who supported Trump, and ended up getting harmed by his policies. (The people living on the Texas border who saw their land appropriated to build his useless border wall, the coal miners who were going to lose medical benefits due to Trump's mismanagement of the health care system, etc.)

Well, its nice to see Meatball Ron following in Trump's steps...

Disney World's first responders once backed Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' plan to assume control of the Reedy Creek Improvement District...But now firefighters are having second thoughts after the new oversight board moved to strip them of special Disney perks...the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District, the rebranded Reedy Creek board, revoked all of the firefighters' free passes to the Disney parks... "The removal of this benefit takes away, for some, their entire reason for working here," firefighter Pete Simon told the Times Online.

Its kind of hard to have sympathy for the people caught up in this. They (or at least the organization they are members of) decided to throw in with a pro-fascist authoritarian, and are getting hurt by it. Suck it up guys. You made your bed, so lie in it.

DeSantis: "You Loot, We Shoot"

Trump: "When the looting starts, the shooting starts."

George Wallace: ""Shoot 'em dead on the spot [...] That may not prevent the burning and looting, but it sure will stop it after it starts."

This seems almost too ridiculous to be true.

Tá an péist tar éist casadh. (Tr: the worm has turned).

The Florida GQP has cast off their Gauleiter in favour of the traitor in chief. I wonder if polling numbers are that bad that they can't even keep the state with their 20+ years of mass election fraud?

DeSantis is an interesting example of a common phenomenon in US politics. It's really surprising the kinds of total charisma-sink and generally off-putting personalities that can somehow be very effective state and local level politicians, but fall completely flat on their face when even the tiniest bit of media attention is put on them.

People turned on their TV and saw who this DeSantis guy they heard so much about really was and immediately, instinctively recoiled, and you can't blame them. He really is an objectionable little freak, and not just in his politics.

The real mystery isn't why he crashed so spectacularly on the national stage, it's how he was able to get so far before now.

This is not strictly a DeSantis issue.

There's just a class of people who can maneuver within their own party because they can kiss the right ass and appeal to juuuust enough of the factions to get a high state seat (Ted Cruz as the Texas Solicitor General) or a small federal seat (DeSantis repping a deep red district in Congress). They basically just run around getting their names out without exposing themselves too much. What little real exposure they do get, its always under very controlled circumstances in front of very friendly audiences. The further they go, the more "image consultants" and focus groups they get access to. Plus, they have built up favors and backing from lots of local groups and politicians.

The problem is, once they get to the national stage, there's a million little wannabes just like them, plus the media microscope, plus very well funded and motivated opposition from the other party as well as their own. The public is far more diverse and looking to tear someone down.

Its like in sports when a highly touted amateur goes pro and gets waxed. On paper, they have all the right qualifications and skills. There's just somethings that only show at the highest levels.

Maybe, maybe not.

According to their web site, a 1 day pass is $109 per person. If you have a small family, that could run you ~$500/day. (I am not sure how many passes a firefighter would normally get but I assume its more than just one.)

If you are the type of person who LIKES theme parks (and would probably visit disneyland anyways) then that $500 could be seen as a rather nice yearly bonus that Meatball Ron and his Klan are taking away. If you were to work at another fire department they would have to offer you more money per year to get the equivalent compensation.
