The DeSantis gambit

People keep criticizing Meatball Ron, but he never gets the praise for things he does right. Did you know he once saved Florida from a hurricane?

From: Yahoo News
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recalled his visit to the Western Wall during a separate trip in 2019.... "The only thing I can tell you... is my prayer in 2019 was that we would be spared the upcoming hurricane season in the state of Florida...At that time, when [Hurricane Dorian] was on that track, people were saying, well, God must not be listening to the governor because we may be getting rammed here … The storm was headed our way, it slowed down, it turned all the way, 90 degrees and went north and never impacted our coast. I'm chalking it up to the prayer I put in..."

See? Imagine if Meatball Ron becomes president... he could protect the entire United States from hurricanes!

(Of course, the cynic in me is asking if his power of prayer is so powerful, why didn't he ask god to make the hurricane disappear so even non-florida residents would not be hurt.)

I do think there's a pot and kettle issue here. The cupidinous corporations have long relied on politicians like De Santis and his ilk to enable them. If both the corporations and the politicians thought they were doing the right thing for the right reasons, it would end there even if they were both quite wrong.

Maybe the corporations really believe in what they do, and really think laissez faire economics, deregulation and draconian labor practices are good as well as profitable, who knows? But it's clear that De Santis, at least, has all along thought his party's right wing free market capitalist stance was not really about that at all, but about making a social bargain. It's not so bad that they're an evil exploitative monster, but they've forgotten to pay the political vigorish.

Big corporations pretend to serve the people while really robbing them, but at least they know who the people are. The Republicans lie about both.

I've never thought of corporations in that way. They may be public corporations but their prime directive is to serve their stockholders. I'm not naive enough to believe that serving the public is ever more than a secondary consideration at most. I expect them to do what is best for them personally. Is this evil? Or merely self interest?

The government on the other hand has an obligation to serve the public and uphold the law. And laws should be made, implemented and enforced fairly. Not in the arbitrary and vengeful way that DeSantis is governing.

Because even God cannot break the law of conservation of energy, he can only make the hurricane move to less devout areas, when a true believer prays hard enough. /s

DeSantis might win in state court ...

Disney's suit was filed in Federal Court. So, at least that step will be skipped.
I was expecting DeSantis to file a countersuit in state court, which is what the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District has now done voted to do.

"Central Florida Tourism Oversight District" is of course the new name for what used to be the Reedy Creek Improvement District (RCID). Interestingly, the RCID web site remains largely intact and still says
A five-member Board of Supervisors, elected by landowners, governs the District.
despite a historical timeline that says, on 17 February 2023,
Governor appoints 5 new board members to Board of Supervisors.

The cynic in me is asking why DeSantis didn't pray away Hurricane Ian if he has the magic sky daddy's attention?

Claiming that his prayer convinced God to turn a hurricane away from FL is, I dunno, just a tad narcissistic? If DeSantis' prayer is so powerful, maybe he should pray to stop being such a douchebag.

I may not have said it well. I don't think that capitalism is inherently evil, though I do think at least some corporations are, and that conservative policies have long been geared to allowing and even encouraging corporate excess in the name of freedom. My point is that the relationship that makes a corporation successful, whether it's good or bad, is knowing what their market wants, which pretty much requires that they know who their market is. They may exist for the benefit of their owners, but they derive that benefit from a presumably somewhat mutual relationship with the consuming public. Sure, they do their best to manipulate the public and enhance their standing in ways that may not involve simple quality. But ideally a business's self interest is mitigated by its need to give what consumers consider value for money. The regulation conservatives so frequently oppose is supposed to prevent those businesses from outright deceiving their customers, abusing their workers, monopolizing markets so as to upset that balance, and so forth. When it doesn't involve their pet prejudices, conservatives call that socialism or worse.

Conservative policies generally are based on the idea that businesses know best what they can and should do, and should be allowed to do it. But then when a business does what it really is uniquely qualified to do, which is to understand who they're selling to and how to do it, the right wingers turn tail and yell "woke woke."

For conservatives to go after corporations for doing legal business is hypocrisy, just as it is with anyone whose rights are denied for failing to conform to social and religious ideas. And that's true for good guys and bad guys alike.

It also makes you wonder, considering how badly Florida got socked on other occasions, why the hell wasn't De Santis praying then? Too busy looking for juicy passages in the school books and lost track of time?

True. It always amazes me when people think a natural disaster or event is punishment for them doing something wrong. Talk about thinking you're the center of the world!

More DeSantis strategy.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday signed a bill allowing the death penalty in child rape convictions, despite a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that banned capital punishment in such cases...The death penalty law DeSantis signed is intended to get the conservative-controlled U.S. Supreme Court to reconsider a 2008 ruling that found it unconstitutional to use capital punishment in child sexual battery cases. I'm someone who believes in free markets. People act out of self interest. So I don't blame them when they do that. But much of what companies do when they become successful is that they attempt to control markets. This is capitalism at its worst. I worked at one time for a company that purchased competitors since it would be cheaper than having to reduce prices. I have had to sign non-compete agreements which is another tactic to keep competition to a minimum.

Big corporations use their political power to prevent disruptive capitalism. Republicans aren't actually in favor of laissez-faire. They support crony capitalism. Big difference. I am not so much bothered by the corporations but by the political prostitution.

He wants to be VERY careful about that. Because history shows that the first and worst offenders are very likely some of the two-teeth moonshine-soaked hillbillies and screaming NASCAR gun-wavers who always vote GOP. He will lose friends and influence people sentencing his base to the firing squad.

That's never really a problem as long as it's only allowed and not mandated. You just allow it to the people you don't like and skip it for those you do.

1. "Drag queens are grooming children for molestation!!"

2. "Death penalty for child molesters!!"

3. Gee, I wonder ...

The governor always gets a bump in popularity after dealing with a hurricane. So, he has probably been praying for them to hit.
