The DeSantis gambit

There might be an Onion story there, but I have no inside contacts there: "Disney creates controversial white princess for movie. Prince also white."

Large dragon prop catches fire during Disneyland show; Disneyland to temporarily suspend similar fire effects globally

An intense fire broke out at Disneyland in Anaheim on Saturday night as packed crowds were enjoying a show at the theme park.

The fire ignited on Tom Sawyer Island during the Fantasmic! nighttime water and fireworks show held on the Rivers of America.

Citizen video captured by parkgoers shows massive flames fully engulfing Maleficent’s dragon prop on stage. The flames first ignited from the dragon’s face before spreading to the rest of its body.

There were no reports of injuries and the extent of the fire’s damage was not immediately known.

Disneyland said the cause of the fire was under investigation.

Maybe they should ask where DeSantis was that night?

DeSantis didn't do it. Gawd hates Disney. Just ask Ron.

Off topic: We saw that probably 30 years ago. It was pretty awesome even then! Even without catching fire.

EmptyG had her arse kicked by her own team the other day. Boebert self-pwned in spectacular fashion. DeSantis is losing a fight with a cartoon mouse. The Orange Anus is facing multiple criminal charges...

If the GOP are smart, and everything says the core factions are (Hi Mitch!), I certainly hope in the near future I can say "Dubalb was right".

Funny thing is De Santis could focus on Disney's labour practices and the well being of the employees there and if they are being [properly compensated for the work that they do. But then that would be too socialist, I guess.

And Disney is suing DeSantis for a "targeted campaign of government retaliation."
Filed pretty much immediately after the DeSantis-appointed board voted to nullify earlier agreements, suggesting they had it ready and were just waiting for the right moment.

The Walt Disney Company filed a lawsuit Wednesday against Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), alleging the state's actions toward the company amount to a "targeted campaign" of government retaliation.

The governor-appointed board — whose members are named as defendants — Wednesday voted to nullify earlier agreements that had given Disney authority over most construction near its Orlando resort.
In the complaint, Disney said the board's move was "patently retaliatory, patently anti-business, and patently unconstitutional."

This is an epically important case. If Disney were to lose, that means that private corporations can be retaliated against for exercising free speech. And that is just a stone throw away from being retaliated against for NOT saying the right thing. "Corporation X did not endorse me in my campaign to become Governor, and I vow I will do everything I can to run them into the ground after I'm elected"... would be legal???

As noted in the article, they stated "Disney also knows that it is fortunate to have the resources to take a stand against the State's retaliation – a stand smaller businesses and individuals might not be able to take when the State comes after them for expressing their own views".

This.
You might argue that Disneyworld no longer needs the legal and incentive breaks it got back in 1967, but that is not what this is about.

If Florida had a re-think, and decided special districts were a bad idea, they'd need to also look at the other 1,939 of them. Given that DeSantis is so dumb to have quite literally said he's retaliating against Disney for "wokeism".

The other part of this is, it will cost Florida money to take over Reedy creek. I know DeSantis has said Disney will still have to pay Reedy Creek bonds even though they no longer control Reedy Creek... but I have my doubts on the legal aspects of that. And this article seems to agree.

Disney is evil? Snow White, Beauty and the Beast and the Jungle Book?

Or is it Star Wars, Indana Jones and the Pirates of the Caribbean?

Well they are refusing to honor Lucas films contracts with writers concerning characters they created. But hey refusing to pay artists for their work is mainstream not evil.

Hmm, haven't heard about that one, you have a link?

There is of course the copyright BS they've pulled in the past.

Of course, neither of those things have anything whatsoever to do with why DeSantis is trying to punish Disney. Its possible they are on the right side in this case, and on the wrong side in others. And perhaps should face legal consequences.
