The DeSantis gambit

Yeah that's the illusion. He's "successful" as in there's not a lot of politicians getting their way more than DeSantis is.

And if whatever he does goes down in flames because the courts stop it or it simply isn't feasible, so what? He got the headlines he wanted and the general public has already moved on.

He's an executive with the seeming full backing of a majority of the legislature and a compliant state court. In a country with a system designed to be dysfunctional more often than not, that level of actual government control is pretty rare.

He's definitely successfully implementing a suite of promised policies. Whether or not that's a good thing depends on individual perspective.

If dysfunction means a system that does not normally allow one individual to get complete power, then long live dysfuntion.

Nearest parrellel to the kind of power that De Santis has in Florida, was Huey Long In Louisians in the 1930's. Did not end well for Huey.

Re: red states with many Democrats/blue states with many Republicans

The mixing of red/blue voters would make secession messy. But that would not stop the GOP from trying.

Being 100% sure that sucession was impossible would not stop them from arguing for it.
Like drag, the issue itself is not important. It is merely something to prevent everyone from talking about serious issues.
The bonus is that by saying sucession would solve all our problems but the obstinate Democrats are preventing it, the Republicans can advance the overarching strategy of us-vs-them.

DeSantis had said in the past that he'd barely had any idea who Level Parnas even was, when it was revealed that Parnassus had funneled Russian money to his campaign for governor. It seems that may have been a little white lie, as there are now numerous emails from DeSantis to Parnas.

Wow. More than a little white lie as DeSantis and Lev Parnas definitely had more than just a "passing acquaintance" relationship. When Russia wants Ronnie and Donnie to win, you'd think their supporters would question why. But that would require some critical thinking which most of them sadly lack.

How quickly the long standing Republican "Russia is EVIL" changed when Trump came along. Remember the two Trumpers whose T-shirts had "I’d Rather Be A Russian Than A Democrat" written on them?

They should go volunteer to fight in the Russian army against Ukraine. Would not last 10 minutes.

In 2016 the voters in Florida overwhemingly (65% to 35%) voted yes on a Constitutional Amendment to restore voting rights to ex-felons.

Felons still can't vote in Florida.

And you know what really crisps my bacon? There's nothing preventing a felon from becoming POTUS.

WHAT A TRULY SCREWED UP COUNTRY.

Stop holding back on showing your utter disdain for the US. Some of your comments are just too subtle and nuanced and we've missed your complete disdain for us. So, go on...tell us how you really feel.

I just want to add: GOD DAMNED AUTOCORRECT!

I honestly think the GOP looks at the kleptocracy in Russia and thinks, "I wonder if we could pull that off?".

From you link:

“Under the less-optimistic scenarios, the risks to our country in their cumulative effect could easily be existential, far greater than any in our federation’s history. What happens, for instance, if high-profile political refugees fleeing persecution arrive in our country and the US regime demands them back. Do we comply?

This is what happened in The Handmaid's Tale. Americans fled Gilead to Canada and Gilead wanted its "political terrorists" back to be tried. With all the GOP anti-choice laws being passed in red states removing a woman's bodily autonomy, The Handmaid's Tale is looking less and less like fiction.

"Is this what you want? How about this? Stop yelling 'Donald Trump' and just tell me what you want!" - Ron DeSantis.
