The congessional circus. Here we are still looking for where the WMD we documented in 1999 have gone to and congressional democrats are already clamoring for a hearing because we haven't found them yet.

Does anyone else find this blatant posturing so early in the search sickening? I can imagine someone will point to past witchhunt hearings to rationalize this, but I don't think it makes it right.

I guess since the fall of baghdad took 3 weeks that they expected the search for WMD to last that long.

I was just looking over the most recent comments from Bush and Powell on Iraq and they agree on one thing (although they concede that no WMDs have actually been found):

The world no longer needs to worry about Saddam Hussein.

Well, duh? If you kill someone, then you no longer have to worry about that someone.

It's politics. Didn't Republicans jump on Clinton for his affair with Monica? It has nothing to do with WMDs, it has to do with politics, same thing with everything that is going on in Congress.

I'm not sure where you are reading that information. I agree with Sen. Levin who clealy states good reasons for an inquiry and they are not because "we haven't found them yet."

On Ralph Waldo Emerson, Self reliance...

Emerson points out that a man not trusting in himself runs the risk of losing himself in society. “A man must consider what a blind man’s-bluff is this game of conformity. If I know your sect, I anticipate your argument” (396). A man loses his identity while attempting to uphold the ideals and doctrine of an institution of which he is a member. Man belonging to a sect can no longer argue for himself and becomes predictable and even a puppet of the organization. Furthermore, “It is only as a man puts off all foreign support, and stands alone, that I see him to be strong and to prevail. He is weaker to every recruit to his manner” (408). Emerson suggests that the individual man becomes weaker as he gains more support. This, he notes, takes place even in organized religion. “Everywhere I am hindered of meeting God in my brother, because he has shut his own temple doors, and recites fables merely of his brother’s, or his brother’s brother’s God” (405). Man, as well as his ideas, becomes diluted through organization. Man learns to trust the institution rather than himself.

I think whats more interesting is that one of the sources on the WMD (some Iraqi exile) may have just been yanking our chain. If he fed us bad information I think he should foot the bill for the invasion.

Best circus I ever saw was in Mexico, it was so small they only had ten acts, way cool.

Exactly.
The nature of politics is predatory.
Politicians on both sides are bloodthirsty to find anything on the other side that could bring them down.
It is absolutely naive to assume this exact same scenario wouldn't be playing out if the Democrats were in power and facing questions about WMD from the Republicans.

Well, duh? If you kill someone, then you no longer have to worry about that someone.

You know, I never got the impression that the world was ever worried about Saddam Hussein. Just the American people, after our government exaggerated his threat-potential.
