The Big Hillary Gaffe

Link.

See a video of the remarks here. The plantation remark is around 1:05.

I don't understand the big deal.

It's attempted political assasination. Hillary has been trying so hard to be bland and moderate lately, this is the best they've got on her.

Wake me up if she goes Howard Dean.

You have probably seen it by now, Hillary pandering in a black church on MLK day and giving a political stump speech. She says something to the extent of "the house is run like a plantation right now, and i think you know what im talking about" and then her eyes bug out as she realizes what she said. Or maybe thats just how her eyes are, its hard to tell with Hillary.

The point is, this was obviously a gaffe to me. She used the term plantation in a speech to a different audience. Using it to this audience with the qualifier she did though was one of the most awkward moments I've seen on video in a long time.

The thing is, unlike Ross Perot who made a fairly innoccuous "you people" comment once, Hillary will be summarily forgiven. Its not even a big hubbub in the press. There isn't even a manufactured feeding frenzy over this.

Its gotten a lot of attention in the press. Matthews last night, and Andersoon Cooper. Much more attention then it deserved. The implication seemed to be that there was somehow some racism involved in the comment, which makes absolutely no sense at all since she was attacking the Republicans for how they ran congress and treated minorities. the right trying to draw comparisons between that and say, Trent Lott's comments, is absolutely nutty, even by their standards, yet the so called liberal media plays along.

Looks like the "liberal" press is gearing up to do a "Howard Dean" on her.

I'm lost...not for the first or last time.

Fox, CNN and now Corplinx tell me this is a gaffe. Now, I'm no fan of Hil's, but a gaffe?

If I had to guess I would imagine the gaffe part was "...it has been run like a plantation, and you know what I'm talking about." Emphasis mine.

That's and odd thing to imply.

That strikes me as pandering, which I expect, more than a "gaffe"...in any event...it doesn't seem to merit the attention save that it is Hillary and she leaves few people neutral.

It was kind of odd. The response was a bunch of mumbling. No cheering. No "Amen". I don't know if it was a gaffe. I know it isn't going anywhere. The legs of this thing is a news cycle. Clinton doesn't feel much heat from it. She certainly isn't apologizing.

I don't know.

I don't know.

But Randfan...apologize for what? Ray Naggin has much stupidity to apologize for and is half-heartedly eating crow today (though no reporter I"ve seen is calling him on his qualification, i.e. that this was the wrong thing to say to that audience -- when would it be the right thing?).

I am not sure why this should embarass Hillary...so why apologize?

I also note that many of those ranting against Hillary (not here) have been or will be again on talk shows at some point condemning excessive P.C....but that's another debate.

Look, the democrats are obsessed with seeing black people as black people. In the meantime Bush, the "insensitive fool" who seems to be totally oblivious or unconcerned with race, treats black people as people without bothering with their skin color, as can be seen with the people who are his closest helpers, for starters, and on the other hand with his refusal to see Katrina as some sort of racial catastrophe--quite rightly, as it turned out that the alleged "massacres" and "cannibalism" and "thousands of dead", alledgedly due to the USA's "racism", were all false.

The result? It is Bush, not the democrats, who seem the most color-blind and fair and for treating blacks just like other people. While this gets howls from the professional victimologists like Jesse Jackson & co., it plays rather well with most black people, who are significantly more conservative in their social and political outlook than the nosiest members of the community lead one to believe.

I misread this thread title as "The Big Hillary Giraffe" and was enchanted by the notion that she's attempting to expand her influence by adopting a giraffe, which she will ride down the streets at a gallop, waving a giant American flag. Then she could have it defecate enormously over Tom DeLay's limo, and say "this stinks less than your dealings, Tom!" and then they'd get into a ninja fight with nunchucks and lots of Crouching Tiger perching on treetops. The giraffe would probably wander off, and get itself a White House press badge because apparently anybody can, these days.

I think you mistook her bug-eyed pause for guilty realization when what she was really hoping for was an AMEN! from the back of the church (Newt missed his cue checking out the poor box).
<snip>
P.S. You have to admit, Corplinx that Hilary's words were overshadowed by God's will and the "Chocolate City."

Its hard to steal the thunder from someone like Nagin. That guy is a portable train wreck.

She did pause for applause or an amen seemingly. But how big of an amen are you going to get telling a jewish group "the house of representatives is like a forced labor camp, and i think you know all what i mean" and then pausing before you elaborate.

I wish politics worked the way they do in your imagination.

Mind you, I wouldn't like a manufactured feeding frenzy. It wouldn't be right. However, it would be fair. Is the US media ever going to get tough on Hillary or will she just be fodder for right wing media like Rush Limbaugh?

As you noted Luke, when you look at her full comment it doesn't look offensive at all. However, Howard Dean "we can't win" and Donald Rumsfeld "you go to war with the army you have" were sniped by the media as well despite being non-controversial in full context.

Perhaps you should get the actual quote, before you open threads like these?

In my eyes, Hillary used the term deliberately. Problem is, I honestly don't think most of the people there knew just what the heck she meant by it. I'll admit that I don't. It sounds like she was trying to be one of the gang while bringing up images of slavery. Those are the images that came to my mind at least (as a white dude in Cali) when I heard the comment. I think the remark fell flat, at least for me it did.

If she was referring to the general way in which the House is run it seems rather coincidental that she would compare it to a plantation while addressing a group of Amrican-Arericans. Nope didn't mean anything racial by that at all...ya whatever.
