The Biden Presidency

Today it will be two weeks that Ossoff and Warnock were sworn in, giving Democrats control of the Senate.
Sadly, this should really be giving Democrats "control" of the Senate.

Lindsey Graham is still chair of the Judiciary committee, and as such is blocking the hearing for AG nominee Merrick Garland.
Is that accurate?

I figured committee assignments would be one of the first things that was done with the new senate session. And according to Wikipedia, Democrat Dick Durbin is currently the chair. (Is this just a case where Durbin has been selected but the paperwork just hasn't gone through yet?)

Yes, it's accurate, however strange that may sound.
The Senate has to vote on an "organizing resolution" to change the composition of the commitees.
Because US politics is ***, until now McConnell held it up (filibustered it).

Apparently today Schumer and McConnell reached a deal, and they'll vote on it today.
@SenSchumer says he & @LeaderMcConnell have reached a deal on organizing the 50-50 Senate. Will be adopted today

Only after that vote will Durbin become Chair of the judiciary committee, and be able to schedule Garland's hearing.
Graham refused to do so in a timely way, as requested by Durbin. (See https://twitter.com/LindseyGrahamSC/status/1356422690098315271 )

ETA: Durbin, yesterday, explained it better than me:

Due to Minority Leader McConnell’s obstruction, Senate Republicans still control the Judiciary Committee and are blocking Merrick Garland’s AG confirmation hearing. They must let Garland get to work on preventing future domestic terror attacks like the January 6 attack.

And it's finally done: Organizing resolution for Senate has been adopted.

Schumer can stop playing with his Space Laser and start being Senate Majority Leader.

McCarthy just got 100% behind Marjorie Taylor Green annoucing no disciplinary actions against her.
Man, it is a thing of beauty to watch. The Dems laid him a trap, and the idiot walked right into it.

Triggering what consequences? He might look a bit of a fool? Anyone watching already knows he is.

The House GOP has just embraced Green and all her nuttiness. That is going to hurt hem with the swing and surburban voters..the very ones they need to win back.

The Dems will put a resolution on the floor condemning Green and denying her all committee assignments. The GOP members will have to vote on that resolution, a vote they adamantly don't want to have. If they vote to protect Green, the 2022 campaign ads will write themselves. If they vote to condemn her, Trump will write the ads. Lose-lose.

We don't have a thread on Fox so I'm posting this here because it discusses Fox's organization which will directly affect the Biden presidency. Here are a few snippets from a very long New Yorker article:

Blair Levin, at that time the chief of staff at the F.C.C. and now a fellow at the Brookings Institution, says, “Fox’s great insight wasn’t necessarily that there was a great desire for a conservative point of view.” More erudite conservatives, he says, such as William F. Buckley, Jr., and Bill Kristol, couldn’t have succeeded as Fox has. Levin observes, “The genius was seeing that there’s an attraction to fear-based, anger-based politics that has to do with class and race.”

.....

Ailes, who died in 2017, was a master of attack politics and wedge issues, having been a media consultant on several of America’s dirtiest and most divisive campaigns, including those of Richard Nixon. Ailes invented programming, Levin argues, “that confirmed all your worst instincts—Fox News’ fundamental business model is driving fear.”

....

She says that the show’s producers would “cull far-right, crackpot Web sites” for content, and adds, “Never did I hear anyone worry about getting a second source. The single phrase I heard over and over was ‘This is going to outrage the audience!’ You inflame the viewers so that no one will turn away. Those were the standards.”

It's not a lightening bolt of news for any of us, but the article clearly shows how we got to this point in the news business.

Ah yes, the old "nothing of any consequence will happen but the voters will remember this!" manoeuvre that Democrats love so well. The next two years of smug gridlock are going to be such fun.

A little more on that...

That statement makes it sound like he is "on the run", but that might not be the case...

Apparently his defense lawyers know where he is. They claim he is living in a "safe house" because of death threats, and are "willing" to give the prosecutors the address if they keep it secret.

If course there are 2 problems with that:

- the terms of his bail require him to let the authorities know where he is living at all times. Not optional

- for a guy worried about death threats, he has certainly been seen in public a lot... Being photographed multiple times in bars, being seen with white supremacists, etc

On the bright side... Much of his bail was paid for by actor Ricky Schroder and my pillow owner Mike Liddell. Hopefully they lose their money over this.

Obviously, there are busloads of Antifa from Chicago paid for by Jeff Bezos that are coming in to attack him.

Don't be silly. It's (((George Soros))) who is funding the Rittenhouse assassins. They plan to use sharks with laser beams attached to their heads. (The same lasers that started the California fires.)
