The Atheist Census under attack.

Done and done.

I do wonder how representative of atheism as a whole this will be, though. It's a fairly self-selecting sample. I'm reasonably certain that 7.8% is a larger percentage of people who like to be described as "humanist" than in the general atheist population.

Of course, the strangest anomaly has to be 73.5% of people who have taken the survey being male. I'd be very surprised indeed if the true gender balance of atheists wasn't as close to 50% as makes no odds.

And, of course, you can't rule out people extracting the urine.

Another issue is that, unless I'm mistaken, English is the only language the website is available in (not to mention on the internet). I can't see any way that this won't be highly underrepresentative.

Hi guys. In the questionnaire where it asks you your preferred title, do I choose 'Rationalist' or 'Other'? I like to think of myself as being 'totally devoid of superstition'.
Would you guys say that falls under Rationalist? Thanks!

I can't help but point out the current census data from Vatican City, which includes one single data point.

Preferred Title: Atheist
Religious Background: Catholicism
Education Level: University or college
Age: 65+
Gender Identity: Male

Who is this man, I wonder. What is his name? I'm tempted to call BS, if for no other reason than the thought of an atheist citizen of Vatican City, which must be a miserable creature indeed. Unless the website has some way of verifying that you are from where you say you're from, it could just be someone who wants people to write posts like this one on forums like this one.

If it's true, then at least 0.12% the Holy See's popuation is irreligious, which to me seems like a gargantuan figure, all things considered.

It's the Pope

It's the Pope

Very clever, but I had that same urge, and the information is very available that the current pope's education level is not "University or college," but "postgraduate." I certainly wouldn't tell anybody I didn't receive a postgraduate degree if I did. But who knows.

I put "atheist". But it's not about what I think, it's about what you think. When asked what your views on religion are, what's the word you commonly use?

It won't let me be counted. Says I should answer questions but no questions appear.
Does your browser have JavaScript enabled?
I'm certified atheist activist according to forum standards. :p
Where do I get certified? :)

It'd be possible to geolocate from IP address if the website wanted to do so. I'd say it'd quite possible for there to be a few non-believers there.
I do not understand the last question "where are you from"
Is that where you were born? or where you live now?
I went with where I am now.

You can select the language at the bottom of the page - seemed a pretty comprehensive list to me...

"Silly" :)
I guess what I'm after is a 'word' to describe me that also encompasses my other forms of (anti)belief, like superstitions and conspiracies. Here's what I'm thinking when I run down the list (and I apologies if its off-topic):

Atheist - Yes, that's a given, but doesn't cover all superstitions
Humanist - I might be ignorant on this definition but is it not just a preference of separation of church and state, where someone could still be religious?
Non-Religious - See: Atheist
Free-Thinker - Too pretentious. No.
Agnostic - No. Also a side-note: This one should be divided into three groups: Gnostic Atheist, Agnostic Atheist and Agnostic Theist.
Rationalist - Maybe this is me?
Secular - I don't know, I'm just not feelin' this one...
Other - Where are Skeptical and Anti-Theist?

I don't see my preferred title - Marquess of Cholmondeley - on the list either.

I do not understand the last question "where are you from"

"15. Which country am I "from" - country of birth or country of current residence?

We consider people to be from the country with which they have their primary affiliation. For some people this will be their country of birth, for some it will be their country of current residence, for others it might be the country where they have spent most of their life. It's a matter of personal judgement."
