BTW: I highly recommend Robert Caro's first volume of his Biography of Johnson, not only is it an extraordinarilly well told tale, it also lays out the transformation of Texas by a combination of big oil, buying Congress and federal government intervention in the economy.

Ditto that. Second volume's not so bad, either, but the first one is what Michener dreamed he was writing when he wrote Texas.

I just read through this thread. Is Perry so ignorant that he believes that hoary old legend about Texas having a clause that allows them to secede?

All posturing. He's pandering to the nutbars to secure that 25% of the vote and sound more Texan than Kay Bailey. Expect his campaigning to center around her being now a citizen of the Beltway and "not as Texan as me". Frankly, as a liberal, I hope she takes the bait and starts sidling up to the nutbars, too.
