Terrorist attack in St Petersburg, Russia

There appears to have been a terrorist attack on St Petersburg metro, and some reports say this has happened in more than one place.

How likely is this connected to the Russian involvement in Syria, or even Crimea?

Could be. Could be Chechnyan involvement, too. I think some Chechens were fighting in Syria too, so maybe some connection to both.

Or, if you believe certain theories, FSB connection.

Casualties now reported as 9 rather than 10. About 50 injured. Reported as one explosion.

...and in other news, Trump eliminates the Senate in an effort to save money that he will send to Russia to help with this tragedy.

How likely is rape connected to dressing provocatively and drinking to excess with strangers?

More seriously, what else would it be connected to? Chinese oppression of Falun Gong? Venezuelan constitutional disputes? California's high speed rail project?

Well, on the news they were saying it could be connected to anti-government protesters.

DailyMail has a photo of one of the bombers. He looks Muslim to me. Well, he has the full beard and a hat shaped like a cylinder.

ISIS is crowing about it, for what that is worth.

Not very much, given ISIS takes credit for just about every terrorist attack that can be remotely connected with the Mideast.

I would give 90% chance that this attack is conenected with Russia's policies toward Muslims.

It was clearly aimed as a message to Putin, in St Petersburg for the day.

Another bomb failed to go off.

I remain sceptical that the person in the picture is necessarily the culprit.

OK. he looks a bit strange, but does that make him the culprit?

No it doesn't. Presumably authorities can watch him on security cameras. He likely had a case or bag on approach to the train and then didn't have it right before the explosion.

Anyone know where Travis is?

Russia's Interfax news agency is apparently saying that a "law enforcement source" told them that it was actually a suspected suicide bombing. Where the guy in the images being passed around comes into things, they didn't say.

EDIT: This Washington Post article seems to indicate he left the bomb that was defused at one station, then boarded a train where he detonated the other bomb, which would be the suicide bomb if Interfax's source is correct.

BBC is reporting that authorities are saying the bomber is aged in the early 20s and from central Asia.

The second device was at Ploshad Vosstaniya, the station I used everyday when I worked there. It's an important interchange for the metro with the main train station on the same square. There's also a major westernised shopping mall and a number of major hotels in the area (Novotel, Park Inn, etc). It's always busy as hell.
