Terror attack in Wisconsin

Abrasive commentary from Spiked's anti-vaxxer-in-chief which articulates the other right wing conspiracy view of this incident. Incipit below:

Yeah, fairly typical. Again, the perpetrator was captured very quickly, charged pretty much immediately, and will remain in custody through his trial; justice is being served fairly swiftly in this case, so some reason to complain has to be manufactured - even if it's as melodramatic as "people's comments about the matter on social media aren't emotive enough" - and treated as if it's every bit as much of an injustice as, say, the alleged killer walking free for weeks or months before charges are even considered, let alone actually brought.

It's already been a week since the car drove through the people.

This is the same passive tone the press takes with regards to police shootings. I agree it is very annoying. My take is that they are trying to avoid having to use the word “alleged”, which is also clumsy and annoying.

It is also that these things are being written with all of the speed and care of a twitter post. "A car was driven" would at least be sensical.

The trial was quite a ruckus, according to the news; however, at the end of the day he's guilty. Per NPR:

A Wisconsin man was convicted Wednesday of killing six people when he drove his SUV through a Christmas parade last year, ending a trial in which he defended himself erratically and sometimes confrontationally.

The jury found Darrell Brooks guilty of six counts of first-degree intentional homicide. He faces a mandatory life sentence on each count.

The jury got the case Tuesday and deliberated for a total of 3 hours and 15 minutes into Wednesday morning before announcing they had reached a verdict.

No death penalty in this one, so it'll just be life in prison.

Brooks first pled guilty due to mental illness, but pulled that, dismissed his public defenders and represented himself. Which, unsurprisingly, went over like a wet fart in church. It didn't take long for the jury to wrap it all up, and find him guilty. He did try saying that he didn't mean to run people over and that the throttle was stuck and he merely panicked.

Six life terms...consecutive. No parole.

Brooks, 40, was sentenced to 17.5 years for each of the 60 reckless endangerment counts, which totals 762.5 years of initial confinement, plus 305 years of extended supervision on top of the six life sentences.

Probably one of the most touching moments from start to finish in this trial, was when someone yelled, "burn in hell you piece of **** !" (not shown in video).

It is just a shame that he wasn't able to be executed. And promptly.
