Teachers, Is it okay to talk bad about them yet?

Its election time, which means every candidate bending over backwards to iconify school teachers. Remember after 911 how every cop or fireman was a defacto hero for about half a year?

Today I was doing volunteer work helping special needs children in an athletic event involving bowling. The kids were great. The schoolteachers who brought them were a mixed bag. Between bowling the kids frames when our backs were turned, trying to take the refreshments for the volunteers, and trying to use the kitchen to order their dinners for later tonight; there were some real winners in the bunch.

Today I learned that you have to hide anything if you don't want it leave in a teacher's purse. I can't wait for this election to be over so we can point out the bad teachers again.

If you ever get the chance to help Special Olympics related events in your area, don't pass it up. No matter how much of a charity scrooge you may be, you will have a great time.

No offense, but I am quite certain that similar would have happened if they had been brought in by accountants or PA's or nurses etc.....

I have been in/around enough different groups to know that a certain percent range of any group will not play nice.

I think that is a given. I just hate the cheesy bend-over-backwards to kiss their butts act the candidates do every four years.

As a group, teachers are less likely to engage in unlawful conduct than any other profession because they have to go through a criminal records check. Is that true in the average work place?

I once dated a teacher, she was just too busy to plan bank robberies.

Maybe it was just too small a sample, but the interactions I had with teachers when I worked at family court led me to believe most were dumber than a bag of rocks.

I've posted this story before, but when I first started that job I used to have to review and summarize witness statements involving school related cases before trial. After struggling through completely incoherent statements with god awful spelling and grammar, I remember thinking to myself on more than one occasion, "Man, this kid is screwed in life" only to discover it wasn't a student witness but rather a "teacher" who composed the pile of crap.

Another example which led me to question the intelligence of the average teacher came when a friend who had worked in international schools overseas (and was actually a very nice lady) was distressed about the prospect of re-certifying back in the United States. At first I thought, "What a waste of money to require someone with so much experience to retest."

Then I looked at the questions that were causing her so much concern:

2x + 1 = 5

Solve for x

:Sigh:

I'm not sure which depressed me more. The fact that someone who'd been teaching (who knows what) for so long could not manage this level of basic math or that the state felt the need to set the bar so incredibly low.

6 out of 10 student teachers in my cohort were pot smokers. :)

Considering how much blame teachers get from the "Standards and Accountability" buzz that ebbs and flows over time, a little ass kissing wouldn't hurt.

The following does not purport to be representative of all teachers. It should be considered only anecdotal, not evidential. All other usual disclaimers apply. Please, no wagering.

Teachers are very much a case of you get what you pay for. Damand for teachers is both nationwide and international. If your area or country doesn't pay teachers too well you are likely to end up with teachers who are not very good.

Let me add to the anecdotal charm: From your link...

Lava Lamp Goddess

Sex Ed. teacher in 10th grade insisted that women didn't orgasm.

I really feel sorry for that man's wife.

I was taught this in 9th? grade (I'm currently 48). The context was that young ladies don't, not that all women don't, and that if she's doing it with you, she gets no pleasure whatsoever, you're causing her nothing but pain. Swear to god; pinky swear even, that is what they taught. [eta: nevermind that my girlfriend at the time insisted upon sex at least once a day and if I refused, she'd tell my parents I was gay...I knew she was joking but I was willing to go along] Then they showed us a Sonny Bono anti-pot film in which he compared smoking weed to smoking cigarettes. Go figure.

But I digress.

Who was the teacher? You guessed it, the gym teacher. I'm sure he had a degree in...something.

Fortunately, some of us do it regardless of the poor pay. I freely admit though that there are an inordinate number of people teaching who should not be. Perhaps, were education actually considered valuable by the average citizen, that might change. I am near retirement and not holding my breath.

Go and ask the average Joe ... no, make that even the most successful professionals (including non-math teachers) to solve that problem and you'll find yourself much more than depressed. (Mind-blowing comes to mind, but I'm sure the actual experience in seeing the general population's confounded reactions will bring much better adjectives to mind.)
