funny you should mention that, I just posted this in another thread earlier today...

I went down to "Occupy Boston" this weekend out of curiosity. I had expected it to be all leftists, but it really was a very strange mishmash of people there...socialists, anarchists, libertarians, etc.

I got to talking with a group of libertarians in "End the Fed" and Oathkeeper t-shirts. They told me that while they identified with the Tea Party in terms of economic and small government principles, they did not agree with the conservative Christian bent to the movement (particularly in terms of gay and reproductive rights) and thus did not identify as Tea Party adherents.

These particular people actually wanted to get rid of all forms of government assistance, including Medicare, social security, and disability (making the occupy Boston movement even more strange to me, considering they were protesting alongside socialists demanding universal health care). I asked them well, what about disability, to which they responded that many people go on disability who have the ability to work. I agreed that this is the case, but I also pointed out that there are people who are genuinely disabled or catastrophically ill, sometimes from birth, who simply do not have the ability to work, or who only have the ability to work in limited capacity and therefor need supplemental assistance to make ends meet.

They stated that the answer to this was twofold.

1. Many disabilities and ailments like autism, some cancers, etc, are caused by vaccines, food additives, and flouride in the water, all of which is orchestrated by the government. If these things were removed from society, this would drastically reduce the number of disabled people.

2. The only reason people aren't completely benevolent to eachother is because they expect government to do it instead. If government provided no assistance to the disabled, society would just take care of them. Health care providers would treat all their needs for free, landlords would let them stay on their property rent free, grocery stores would give them free food. For those without family support, strangers would open their doors to them and care for them if they were unable to care for themselves. All disabled people would be completely cared for by their community if not for the government.

I was also told by the same people that though making us sick was not the goal of flouride (just a side effect). The goal was to make the population passive, which is what I was told by them flouride does. I was also told that Nazi Germany put flouride in the water for the same reason.

I think the Tea Party should be open to all crazy and stupid ideas. They have been so far. This will make it much easier to identify the raving lunatics in society.

Let's be clear here: David Jackson is just some random person who wrote that on an internet message board. David Jackson has no significance. The commission is significant. They're probably making the wrong decision here, but the only quotes from them backing up their decision are, well, quite a bit less sensational:

"I haven't seen any evidence since last Tuesday to compel me to change my vote," Brickfield said Monday, noting reports of improved dental habits and sources of fluoride elsewhere. "If we're getting that much every day, why do we need to put it in the water?"

So he's not claiming any malevolence, and he's not denying that fluoride has benefits. But that doesn't make for exciting copy, so the journalist found some random nutjob on an internet message board and quoted him to add zest to the story. In fact, that's the only quote in the whole story from anyone who believes in a conspiracy.

After all, he has been trying every issue for the last couple of weeks in order to get some good media attention, so he might as well try using the flouridated water issue as well. After all, at this late hour such a thing can only help his persidential campaign because if it does not work, then it will not make him look any less crazy/desperate than he already is.

The Nazis put fluoride in water to pacify Jews during World War II, a local resident told members of the Pinellas County Commission on Oct. 4, 2011, before the commission voted 4-3 vote to stop fluoridating water for about 700,000 residents.

I didn't notice that it mentioned the Tea Party though.

But that’s obviously because Caso has been pumped full of toxic fluoride designed, as he said, “to keep people stupid.” His very stupidity proves his stupid premise.

The Teabaggers wear tricornered hats. The Birchers believe in a silly conspiracy about fluoridated water being a communist plot. The same silly conspiracy theory that drove a Florida town to outlaw it, a move driven by Teabaggers.

Is this really that unclear what I'm talking about?

Come on, this is a bit of straw. Who said it was "complete overlap"? People have been suggesting that the Tea Party wasn't just a rebrand of the nutty right fringe, but was instead some grassroots amalgam of concerned citizens who just care about fiscal responsibility. I've said that these are the same folks who joined the John Birch Society. The far right of the far right. In fact, CPAC was sponsored by the JBS this last time around. The overlap is heavy, even if not "complete", if such a thing were even possible.

What a blast from the past. My very first exposure to political hyper-crazy was when I was a little kid and our neighbors were Birchers. The mom told me all about the flouride conspiracy. Plus how the Chinese were breeding humans with apes to create a super army. No joke.

They tested two cities and found the one they gave fluoride to crashed in number of cavities. Politicians fell all over themselves to introduce it everywhere, so they could look like the heroes.

I would be stunned if it had a secondary side effect that was beneficial to Worldly Overlords.

There are still folks who lobby against it in the city my parents live in. I grew up elsewhere, but did high school there. The difference between my teeth and a native's teeth were quite obvious to my dental hygenist.

I just don't get these people. "Hey, we have this idea for cheap and effective health care." "HOW DARE YOU! MONSTER!"
