The Third Reich's gun control laws were mostly carried over from the Weimar Republic. However, it's true that Jews were explicitly barred from possessing firearms as of 1938. I'm not convinced that they would have been able to defend themselves even if they had been armed, but it was one more dehumanizing step.

I don't think it is a stretch to say that there were almost certainly some who would have lived had they been armed and able to defend themselves but to blame the entire Holocaust on strict gun control? I'm not sure how any rational person could believe that the idea has any basis in reality........

I don't think it is a stretch to say that there were almost certainly some who would have lived had they been armed and able to defend themselves but to blame the entire Holocaust on strict gun control? I'm not sure how any rational person could believe that the idea has any basis in reality........

I don' think it's a stretch to estimate the entire process of eradicating a sub-population would be a slower, more painful and far less popular if they were armed.

Probably last as long as anyone trying a "second amendment" remedy in this country. Unless you have blackhawks, predator drones and tactical nukes in the garage it's a non starter.

Same for the guys attempting to keep the panzers from their door with hunting shotguns and rifles.

Legal or not, weapons weren't particularly hard to come by (especially once the war started). Those willing and able to fight back did so (See: Partisans, Warsaw rebellion, etc).


Even with easily available firearms, though, rising up against a heavily militarized government is a wee bit more difficult than it seems on paper (or, for that matter, internet message boards).

I cannot imagine how having a gun would have increased the likelihood of any Jew surviving until the end of the war. Can you describe what you mean by your speculation?

Nothing about having a gun says you have to openly face a tank directly with it.

I went to school with a guy whose (very old) father had been a teenage partisan in Poland in WWII. He supposedly took his shotgun and headed for the mountains to link up with other resisters. Using their own weapons they were able to raid enough to surivive until the Red Army arrived. Most of the partisans he was with were farmers or hunters familiar with the country and able to live outdoors for long periods. They captured German weapons in ambushes and replaced their hunting rifles with Mausers to standardise ammunition.

I hope nobody thinks I posted this thread to start an argument about gun control.

But I will note that there are examples of countries, like Japan for instance, with strict gun control laws, and yet this has not led to a Holocaust yet.

I hardly think that if Jewish civilians had guns that it would be much use against the Nazi armies. Maybe a handful of people would have gotten away or killed a Nazi or two before being killed themselves, but there still would have been a Holocaust.

Look, I happen to be into guns and knives. So I frequent forums with gun-and knife nuts.
People who like stuff like that have elaborate fantasies about why they need to buy all that cool gear.

Look up 'home defence' on Youtube. People in Utah are anticipating mass-home invasion by scores of violent criminals.
They have small arsenals, with carefully selected ammunition and back-up weapons.

The idea that these things happen on a regular basis, is a fantasy they need to justify all that training (well, camping trips) and gun-buying.

Same with the American militia movement.
Guys getting together in the woods to train, for when the 'gubmint' comes fro their guns.

A confrontation between some militia and the US Marines, would be a rather short and bloody affair IMHO.
