They weren't out protesting, that's for sure. But I've always taken exception with the idea that no conservatives were complaining about this at all the last eight years. I haven't listened to Rush anywhere near as much as I did in the 90's, but I heard him lamenting Bush as not being a "true conservative", MANY times. I heard him calling many of the Republican's "RINO" (Republican In Name Only) and suggesting that they were just tax and spend types as much as anyone on the left. He also (numerous times) suggested that the motivation they had was equally as bad as that he felt that the Democrats had. Giving gifts to buy votes. Buying support of the people.
Hell it started before he was even elected. I was still listening back then pretty much daily. And I remember when he won the primaries, many on our side were like "really?". Because the history of GWB in Texas was said to be that of "reaching across the isle" and "working with democrats". And we felt that there was no way he'd pull that off on a national level, if he even did in Texas.
And we didn't want him to. If you listen to the more partisan conservatives, they have no time for Democrats AT ALL. They feel that those who pander to "reaching across the isle" are FOOLS for doing so, as it will never be reciprocated. And just look at McCain. He was the ultimate "reaching across the isle guy". One of the most moderate (if not the most) Republican's of that entire era. And we all see how well that worked for him once he was up against a Democrat. It was all forgotten, and he was a warmongering elitist who wanted to help the rich and make the poor suffer, and all that other ********.
Other conservative pundits were saying this kind of stuff as well. Mostly on Fox news and the like. But it was going on. People that keep insisting it wasn't help lend credence to ivory tower type theories. Just because you weren't seeing it, doesn't mean it wasn't happening. Much happens outside your own little worlds.
