This is a good point. I think prior to TAM, the only skeptical conferences that existed were the much smaller ones organized by the Skeptics Society, starting around the mid-90s (?). It's good news for the skeptical movement (even for those who say there is no such thing) that planners and attendees need to think about conflicting dates now.
Coincidentally, I was going through the Skeptical Inquirer DVD that includes the first 29 volumes, and came upon an announcement for CSICOP's "first international conference of scientists and skeptics," held in 1983.
James Randi, Steven Shaw (Banachek) and Michael Edwards did a panel on Project Alpha. They were reunited at TAM9.
