TAM Highlights?

These folks speak at countless different conferences and events, but it's only TAM where someone like Adam says "My goal is to bring as many Mythbusters to TAM every year as I can." (I'm not making that up--he really said it.)

While at the podium, he gestured broadly and said, "These are my people."

Adam is even nicer in person than he is on TV.

I agree compleatly.

He was the only of the presenters who was more excited to meet me than I was to meet him. I was warmly greeted by Hitchins, or what passes as warmth from him; very kindly greeted by Randi and Jamy; had a few good laughs and lunch with Phil Plait; and was blown off by Penn.

Adam is awesome.

FYI, I am adding red hair dye to my shopping list...... (learning some jokes....reading the encyclopedia....)

Chip... you were even cooler than I expected. Don't change the color of your hair for a woman.

By the way... I'd love to see your 16 foot dish. What kind of a feedhorn and rotor do you have on it? Is it for EME or soemthing?

I've been thinking of maybe an EME wifi project for fun

Er... question for Kittynh. You've been at this for a while? Since TAM-1? Are you a staff member of the foundation? You said you know randi well and your daughters are apparently big insiders on the whole thing... er something?

I don't know if I'd be considered very important, other than a regular forum poster. I really would love to be a major contributor to the whole movement... that would make me feel I actually had my life contributing to something really worthwhile.

I really don't know that I want to start my own website/blog though, because... I just don't really know I have the time to keep it up all the time. Nor do I know that I have any idea for a unique take on things...

Just kinda interested because you seem to be someone who's been helping this along since the begining. And me... well I stuffed some folders and TAM and I post to a forum a bit...often wthout spellchecking.

I haven't even tried to speak to Penn. Probably because he is a good furlong taller than me.

I've never heard of him blowing anyone off though. Is this a common experience for the attendees?

Yes, he's big on the blow-off. And not the sexy kind, either. If he wants something from you or if he has a lot of time and you only want a pic or an autograph, he's nice. Otherwise he's pretty abrupt, based on my experiences with him and how I've seen him treat others.

(Edited to add that he was the only person I felt acted like that at TAM. Teller, Matt and Trey, Hitchens, Adam, Julia, and the other "names" were all absolute sweethearts, to me at least.)

Who would ever perpetuate such a notion? That is utterly preposterous!

Whoever told you that was obviously not telling you the truth. Nor was that person interested in telling the truth.

I won't ask you who that person was, but you decide how you want to deal with that person in the future.

Since I don't remember who told me, I won't know how to deal with them in the future. But I was really hoping they were correct! But apparently not. :(

I just remembered a highlight - telling the people at a crowded JREF table that the TAM DVDs were free, and then watching Claus' reaction! LOL.

I don't know the person, so I don't know if it was meant in jest. Also, I don't how they reacted. Since, I was on the otherside of the room.

I was sitting a little too close to stars and stripes lady that morning. She seemed unphased by the rejection, smiled and commiserated with the folks sitting near her.

Sad to say - agreed.

My brother-in-law worked as a Security screener (you know - those hapless individuals that travellers love to hate) in Las Vegas for 2 or 3 years in the recent past. He saw MANY celebs come and go through McCarran. But Penn was the one he specifically mentioned as being extremely obnoxious and rude to the security staff.

(Who are only doing their jobs.)

Why would you hope that JREF had denied Girl 6 the microphone??

I don't have any recollection of that. When was this?

(And for anyone who doesn't know her but who has been following this thread up to Claus' post, Girl 6 is most certainly NOT the weird Unitarian lady who wouldn't shut up at TAM3.)

I suppose you could chalk it up to the burden of celebrity.

But I am reminded of what Scott Adams said about the loss of privacy that comes with celebrity. He told an interviewer he didn't mind everyone asking for photo-ops and autographs, people pitching ideas and all the other "annoyances" that come with fame.

"Why is that?" he was asked.
"Because I'll miss it when it's gone."

Stop sweating the height thing man. Besides, Penn really IS magic... He's only an inch taller than me, and I feel *tiny* next to him.
