TAM 9 Program

NECSS panels do seem to be the exception, they have always been well run. I know for those the panelists did meet and discuss the topic ahead of time and it definitely shows. I have enjoyed all the NECSS panels.

I've never been to NECSS, so I'll trust you and Scrut on it :) I think panels *can* be done well, and maybe the NECSS people have figured it out.

But the ones I've seen at TAM over the years are a crap shoot. Everyone takes their little 5-8 minute speech and tries to drop them into a coherent order, and more often than not they are as smooth as a Jamy Ian Swiss audiovisual presentation.

Panels aren't as bad as, say, reading from your own book, or just not preparing anything and fielding questions from the audience. But they do make me grab a seat near the back and close to the door.

I do not like this program. Tyson and Dawkins at 8-9 pm on Friday and Saturday night? What's wrong with having them on during the day? So we are scheduled a 2 hour dinner break and then have to go back to the conference for the remaining hour of it? That means we are confined to the hotel for dinner.

NOT good scheduling.

It cuts into drinking time.

Although, personally it doesn't really effect me. Other than going to the Peppermill (likely Sunday), I never leave the place anyhow.

That's just bad. My BF's birthday is Friday and I wanted to do something for him between the program and Penn's party. So much for that.

Won't the short break cause people who would otherwise leave around 6:30-7 to be stuck at the SP for dinner? Therefore, making all the dinner places at the SP that much more crowded?

Also, won't people lose their prime seats from the daytime if they have to leave the auditorium for dinner? I remember from last year (my first TAM), we could leave stuff in our seats over the lunch break, come back, and find our seats un-taken. Can we expect the same courtesy ahead of the keynote?

I expect you'll be able to leave your stuff.

And yes, it will make the inside joints more crowded. I guess we'll just have to deal with it.

I'm not fan of panels either. Nor am I a fan of solo speakers. I think the entire conference should be comprised of all the speakers on stage at once, playing a game of Mad-Libs . . . to the death!

Mmmmm . . .That's good barbarism.
