Tam 8

I saw a flight advertised in the paper yesterday that is quite reasonable, so I'm going to go and harass my travel agent this morning to see what I can get out of him!

Does anyone know when registration for TAM8 will open? Will there be a group code for a discount at the South Point Casino? Thanks.

Registration was supposed to open last week, so it should be soon. There will most likely be a group discount, but last year it was possible to get rates cheaper than the group discount. When JREF president D.J. Grothe appeared recently on Skepticality, he sounded like he was encouraging people to try to get the cheapest rate possible.

Thanks for the update, TsarBomba.

~US$1200 total for TAM8, eeeep! Well, I just gotta go at least once. I finally made it through all of the Skeptics' Guide to the Universe podcasts and TAM7 looked like a blast; that and CaptainDisillusion's summary was great too. :)

Just curious: what is a reasonable cost from Australia to the USA?

(I'm sure this is going to make me wince...)

Richard who?

OK; so no child care options. Well, since I'm paying 1000 bucks for the air fare and 200 on the room, I might as well drop some cash on a babysitter as well. Or sell the kids to be able to afford the trip.

Does anyone need fresh organs?

The deal was to San Francisco for a little over $1600 AU return. Unfortunately Qantas were taking the piss, and the price isn't available for the dates they advertised. "Oh, but we did advertise the price as being from $1600."

I'd like to pay somewhere around $1500-$1600 AU or less. Last March I found a flight that would have got me to TAM 7 for just over $1100, and I'm hoping a similar price may pop up in the next few weeks. Realistically, Aussies can expect to pay anywhere between $1400 to $2300.

Ouch. As predicted, I am wincing. I am now more convinced than ever that Las Vegas needs teleporter booths.

I have a deal alert setup with Kayak, from Boston to Sydney. That's been hovering around 1600-1700 US. May want to check their site.

The prices that I mentioned are only to LA. However I did find one yesterday from Melbourne to Vegas that was with V Australia for $2045, but the days I would need to arrive and depart on allow no additional time anywhere.

Anyone wanna recommend some cheap ways to get to Vegas from LA?

I know some LA Forumites have driven to Vegas in previous years.

True, and it could be a good idea to organize a few carpools this year. Last year I tried to find some people willing to drive me, but I waited too long and everyone already had carpool buddies. That said, I don't think I'll need to carpool this year because I'm in much better physical condition, but we can start a "Who needs a ride from LA to Vegas?" thread once the date gets closer.

As far as I can see, registration for TAM isn't open yet. Is that right? Or am I just not seeing it on the front page

If you can get to LA, I see $60 flights one-way to LV from LA on priceline.com. There's always the bus too, if you're resilient.

I don't know about the busses out there, but when I went to NECSS I took a bus from Boston to NYC and it wasn't bad at all. Took about 5hrs (google maps says about the same time wise for LA to LV). The bus had an outlet in every seat and free wifi for the trip and was $30.

Considering the crap you have to deal with for airline travel, it's not all that bad.
