Talk Radio

Gee. And to think I thought left-wing radio didn't succeed (so far) because not enough people want to listen to it. Obviously I was misinformed: it's all a right wing conspiracy, of course. How could I have been so blind.

I dunno, but I thought the same thing. We should probably do something about that.

Well, apparently nothing, which is why Obama is against the "fairness doctrine".

Of course this will not stop halfwitted lunatics screaming about it, but hey, what would?

Lets see. It is endorsed by Bill Clinton, John Kerry,Nancy Pelosi, the list goes on and on. Are these the half wits you're talking about?

I dunno about Clinton, but when it comes to Kerry and Pelosi, the answer is a definite "yes".

Over vast tracts of SW Washingtonj. you can't get progressive talk radio if you want to. Their hamsters can't compete with sports radio from distant stations.

When acorporation has a stranglehold on the local radio market, they wil, naturally, put the brands they own on the high-powered stations. Murddock and the others are not going to compete wityh the stars who stroke their egos by giving a dissenter like Hartmann a shot at them on a strong signal.

What makes a "good signal" good? Could it be ratings? You may not want to hear that Rush trumps Hartmann, but in the Seattle market, he does...consistently. To beat Rush in the Seattle market (ktth), you have to add up the arbitrons (search seattle market) for both KPTK and KVI. I suppose you can consider that a victory for 'progressive' radio as a whole, in that particular area, but certainly not a victory for Hartmann.

Do you have the figures for the Portland market?

If the Fairness Doctrine can be modified to include a "beat Mancow with a blunt object repeatedly" clause, I'll be on board in a heartbeat.

Just when I thought I could never support the reimplimentation you give me the one provision which would allow me to do so.

Instead they are just going to attempt to bully corporate radio people into dropping talkshows one local station at a time.

Which station? KSKY? KLIF? WBAP? Are they going to make KRLD drop Lars and have more Rangers or Mavs coverage at 10pm?

This is like a broken record. Why do I get the feeling that if this Hartmann got on a "strong signal" you'd complain that he isn't in a "good timeslot?"

If the market demanded more of it, they'll get it. They don't, so liberal radio flounders. And then you claim it isn't the fault of the hosts who can't put on a strong show, it's just Murdock's fault.

If the market demanded a lot of BS from a fat eunuch, Murddock would not have lost money for five years spreading the Rushblob's stuff on stations that he owned.

I'd guess that liberals are less inclined to listen to inflammatory non-sense, from either aisle.

Good. Now we can focus on real issues, like the liberal assault on Christmas.

What you don't, or possibly refuse, to understand is that the fact that he IS on the air, and has so large of an audience, shows that the market does indeed want to hear him.

Actually, libs still manage to get their daily requirement of anti-Republican injections from Diane Rehm, Daniel Schorr, and Terry Gross. Or doesn't it count if they broadcast on FM?

I'd put them in a different league.
As for the anti-Rush, I'd go with Randi Rhodes or Mike Malloy.

I sure hope not. Without the talk broadcasters on those stations, the entire auto leasing, foundation repair, and LASIK eye surgery industries in the DFW area would surely slip into obscurity and fade from the public consciousness.

We'll see. I'm still waiting to see how 105.3's switch from testosterone talk to sports will effect the strip club and adult video store industry locally. :D

Not to mention TV with PBS and the Bash Bush Week After Week Program Frontline.

The NPR crew may be slightly more subtle in their ideological agenda than the bombastic Limberger, but make no mistake, they are as committed to spreading their liberal point of view as Limberger is to expressing his conservative one.

And who could forget Bill Moyers, PBS's hypocrite in chief.

"According to recently released FBI files, J. Edgar Hoover’s operatives conducted several investigations of the sexual lives of political figures in order to collect “damaging personal information,” especially any evidence of homosexuality.

Some of the investigations were requested by the LBJ White House. “Even Bill Moyers,” the story notes, “a White House aide now best known as a liberal television commentator, is described in the records as seeking information on the sexual preferences of White House staff members. “

Not in front of me. I looked up the figures for the Seattle market because that's what you referenced. I provided a link. Do your own legwork this time (better than shooting from the hip).

I suspect (but do not know) that you'll find Rush tops all markets in his talk-radio sector. Love-him, like-him, tolerate-him, hate him; Rush is tops at what he does.

In another thread someone called Rush's rhetoric 'tired'. I'm not sure what the poster meant but I'd categorize his 'rhetoric' as being so cutting-edge that 'tired' only enters the equation because it is so oft repeated and referred to.
