Taking pictures at TAM

Hey, I´m wondering if taking random pictures at TAM is unnaceptable. I love unposed photos but I´m wondering if it´s not cool to take pics without consent. I´m not a creepy kinda guy, I just love girlsphotography.

Also, I have a Pentak K100D DSLR which is kinda loud, but I´d love to take pics of the guest spearkers, something my Point & Shoot wont do well enough given the low light and distance, but I´m affraid that I´ll disturb my neighbor skeptics. Is there a designated place for taking pictures?

Snap away. There's no designated photo shoot area, and you can ask anyone, at anytime, if you can get your photo taken with them.

We have numerous photo threads after each TAM, where people share their photos. The threads are much enjoyed by those who were there, and much envied by those who weren't.

As you can see, it is very relaxed... :)

Great pictures!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am sooooooooooooooo excited!!!

Puggy, I would note that there are a couple of Forumites that DO NOT want theri pictures to appear on the Web for their own personal reasons, they are somewhat amenable at times to having their picture taken, but usually only for folks they know and trust.

So it never hurts to ask. Me, as long as it doesn't break your camera, you can take whatever pictures that include my mug and post them anywhere.

It should be noted that logically, if the caption does not identify who the person is, then it's not so much an issue. If you are taking a general unposed crowd shot, it's neither possible nor practical to get permission from everyone in it afterwards.

But if you get a PM from someone saying "do you mind removing that pic, I'm in it and would rather not be", it's only polite to comply (if you are nice that way). Of course, getting them to prove it's them in the pic is rather more complicated :D

I guess taking pictures during the talks is a matter of JREF policy so you might want to wait for official word from Jeff on that one.

It's never been a problem in the past, as most people have been respectful and unobtrusive when taking their pictures. Of course, depending on how the Riviera conference facilities are laid out, picture-takers may indeed interfere with the talks. Guess we shall see...

I don't think the sound of a shutter is a bad thing, but it's polite to silence any other beeps the camera might make. Which reminds me, I should do that very thing to *my* camera right now while I'm thinking about it...

Not to derail this topic too much, but I'm always surprised at how many audience members will talk, crunch their ice, tap pencils, shuffle papers, etc during presentations. I know that no one here would ever do such a thing... I'm talking about those other people. The ones who are probably moles from the Sylvia/Uri/Illuminati camp.

Speaking for myself, I've seen many people taking pictures during talks. DI is right, silence you camera, turn off your flash, and be careful you don't block others view of the speakers.

Pictures have not been allowed during some of the performances. For instance, I remember Ian Rowland making an announcement to that effect before he started his performance.

Snap away.

Thanks!

Got it.

I´ll put in the K-Mart bargain lens for a picture of both of us. Don´t worry.

Some blackmail should handle that. ;)

Way ahead of You :D

You sound exactly like my Sylvia/Uri/Illuminati always trying to derail co... /LOST CARRIER

Ok, but I´ll ask before each presentation, just to be polite.

Thanks everyone for Your kind replies.

Agreed, but in my opinion it doesn't hurt to state official policy, either here or at the conference itself. Apart from anything, mobile-phone video footage of some of the talks at TAM4 is on Youtube, and if I was a speaker (particularly if presenting copyright material) I would be mighty annoyed by that.

But, tis a matter for the Powers Wot Be. If they aren't bothered, why should I be?

PS I insist on being in as many photos as humanly possible. See TAM4 for details. I mean it. If I'm not in at least every other photo, I will go home disappointed. And don't even get me started on the TAM CAM...

well, I don't mind posting photos of myself or Kitten2. But since she is underaged and since I am overaged, I'd rather post photos of myself or her (highly edited by photoshop). Plus, I burned my face yesterday in a bizarre Thai cooking accident! Right now little children run in horror, and dogs howl. However, by TAM I'm sure it will be just hideious instead of horrific.

I just like someone to clear with me unless I am in a crowd shot, and especially with my underaged daughter. I think the teenagers should all get a check in with the parent just to be sure.

Pics and Tips

I have been lucky enough to get some "keepers" of the speakers at TAMs 3 and 4:

Last year, I posted some tips for taking photos at TAM. Getting nice shots of the speakers is very VERY difficult. Made even more difficult by the fact that it seems like it should be easy. But it can be done. Read how:

If I weren't so shy and unconnected, I'd hang out with some known troublemakers and get some real photographs.

Ok, I´ll be careful about that. Or You´ll just have to be by my side all the time to avoid taking pictures of You. :D

SYLVIA, YOU´RE NOT FOOLING ANYONE! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO kittynh!!!

Sorry, didn´t understand this part, please explain.

Speaking as a Photographer, I would suggest that if anyone would rather not have their pics taken and/or displayed on the web please approach the photographer that took or is about to take your picture and explain it to them. I have found this method is easier and far more effective then stating in advance your desire for privacy. For the simple reason that the photographer most likely won't know what you look like or who you are before the event.

I do shoot events such as TAM and on occasion have been approached by a subject who had specific desires, which I do my best to fulfill. I don't have any issues deleting a pic on the spot to accommodate my subject. But I do try to keep one pic of the person so I know to remove them from other shots if I am able.

Special consideration should be taken for taking pics of children. Many parents get nervous when people take pics of their children. They wonder why you would want a pic of their child. It is best to approach the parent before or after a pic of a child so they know who you are. When I approach parents I offer my personal information to the parent with a way they can contact me.

Understand that most photographers will do what you ask. Now speaking for myself if I post your image and you wished it not to be, let me know. I will remove it as quickly as I can.

....does that mean you're a tosser....? ;)
Teek's visage can turn an otherwise innocent individual into a tosser. Ogle at your own risk.

And, as Borat might say, "CFLarsen... not so much.":(

And, as I might say, "Phyz... not at all.":D

I just meant there will be some teenagers at TAM, girls, and if anyone remembers what Kitten2 wore! (she was voted "worst dressed")

Just some parents might not want their 14 year old posted on the internet

I don't mind you taking photos! I just don't want them posted all over the world (but it will happen anyway, and people will be glad that JREF is so accepting of people with leprosy. Those Xians hate them, but the skeptics let them come out in public....it's icky looking let's just say!)
