Wow, that's the most confusing chart I think I've ever seen. And I've seen a lot. I usually don't chime in on other countries' politics but I'm kind of interested in this one since I'm a latte-sippin', NPR listenin', Volvo-drivin' Seattle liberal. Is this good or bad?

This is VERY good😊 I won't start breathing again until all votes are counted (so i won't breathe until Wednesday), but it is looking very good - our disgusting far right party was poised to be part of the government, but the opposition, social democrats and greens et al, seems to have pulled ahead. This was a very important election, the right has been in power for four years, supported by the far right, and we need a change from some of their authoritarian and inhuman policies (the far right ran on even more draconian changes to our migration policies, and criminal laws).

I am relieved, this weekend has been a very anxious one, as the two coalitions have seemed neck and neck.

Excuse me while I do a little happy dance💃

Looks like the centre-left has increased its lead to 3%. The hard right are NOT happy; X/Twitter is now a cesspit of their blaming...well, the usual demographic. All doom for Sweden: dooooooomed! Let them in and they vote...left!

😭😿

We live in interesting times... It will take a little time for a functioning government to be up and running, there are four parties, with very different ideologies, that are going to have to find a way to work together. But I actually think they will, they all agree on at least one thing; the far right should be kept as far away from power as is humanly possible.

Nobody in the Nordics understands it either -plenty of spoilt ballot papers as it's so confusing - but it's basically proportional representation, split between numerous parties, which means having to form coalition governments. AHA! Be grateful the USA has a two-party system. ;)

My newspaper Politikens more or less predicted that because of “red lines” that some parties have drawn, it will become impossible to form a coalition without some party breaking a campaign pledge, and because Sweden has a rule that a new election must be called if no government has been formed within four weeks, it is most likely that there will be a new election.

As a consequence, I don’t know if I think the result is good or bad.

But I go with @Helen so I voted “good”!

There aren't that many spoilt ballot papers, most of the ones that aren't aporoved are ones where the voter has written a made up party name (the Donald Duck party always gets a few votes, for instance), I doubt any Swedes are confused. There are too many parties (parties with 4 or more oercent of the votes get into parliament), 8 of them atm, and they form two loose coalitions of 4 parties each. Not too complicated; in Denmark, iirc, there are 17 parties/groups, Norway has 9, and in Finland, as you know, there are 9 parties/groups.

I think a solution will be found, but no, I am not certain. The four parties that need to find a way to cooperate, are all very mindful of what's at stake...

Would you be surprised if I told you that the far right are saying that the election was rigged? Well, prepare to be surprised, then; the far right are saying that the election was rigged! (Which is actually pretty much impossible, but then they have no idea how elections work.)

Other than that, there are constant meetings between various party leaders, and constant comments from reporters, trying to guess what is being said in those very secret meetings.

They are blaming the immigrants, of course, for voting left. Here's a typical butt-hurt tweet:

Yes, one wonders why immigrants didn’t vote for the party that wants to deport them, or, if that's not possible, remove most of their rights.

It's very puzzling.

They are also complaining about the fact that the (not so very) left campaigned in areas where there are lots of immigrants. It's all very unfair!
Shades of Matt Goodwin complaining about Gorton and Denton by election.

Apparently Reform would have won if it wasn't for the fundamentalist Muslim men voting for a woman in a party run by a gay Jewish man

saw one guy whining about a district saying it was 94% "foreigners" and they voted 94% for the left.

So I looked it up the vote was ineed 94.7% for the left, but the district is only about 80% "foreigners" (born abroad or at least one parent born abroad, but still need to be a citizen!) ... but it also only had about 140-150 votes total in the district. 🤷‍♂️

Another one claimed the majority of the 200000 or so new citizens since the 2022 elections were muslims from the middle-east and africa.

Looked it up... nope, less than half, and no record of ethnicity (we've had a lot of christians from syria/ethiopiaq/south sudan etc though)

Even when they may have a legitimate topic to raise, they can't resist the urge to lie and exaggerate, I assume to trigger fear, hate and other emotions.

These voters, the "foreigners", mostly belong to groups who have always voted left; the underpaid and overworked, ie those who care for others - health care, home care, child care, service sector, gig workers - the new working class. The old working class is well paid nowadays, and grumpy, and vote for the far right. Yes, I am generalising, but it's true on the whole.

I am not at all sure why single mums, who work as assistant nurses, and who wear themselves out, trying to make ends meet, trying to build a good life for their kids, would vote for a far right that has have never cared about them.

Oh, and another thing; the far right should be very grateful that there are so many working class "foreigners", since their voting rate is low, back in the day, when 95% of all those eligible voted, the right was stuck in limbo for 65 years. We're down to just over 80% now, if we weren't, the far right would have been much further behind.

So Sverigedemokraterna should be endlessly grateful for the immigrants. But are they? ◊◊◊◊ no. The ingrates!

Sverigedemokraterna, the far right, have supported the government (and as things have worked out during the past four years, they've pretty much run the place), so it pleases me immensely that they have lost quite a few votes, compared to the 2022 election. When I was trying to find a bright side back then, I told myself that they'd finally show how incompetent they are, and I suppose they did. Their biggest losses happened in what has been their stronghold in southernmost Sweden, especially in places where they have been in power. As we say in Sweden; skadeglädje är den enda sanna glädjen (schadenfreude is the only true freude)😊
