Sweden invaded Poland in the 1600's

I am more than half way through reading "Poland" by James Mitchener.

Until I read this book I never knew that Sweden not only invaded Poland but slaughtered, raped, and made slaves in their conquest.

BTW The word "slave" is derived from the Slavic people.

When you read this great book and compare the 1600's to modern times, you with see many parallels.

Why slaves? Slavery was outlawed in Sweden in the 14th century, and this was before our (very minor) participation in the Atlantic slavetrade.

The rabbit hole goes even deeper. First there were the Prussian Crusades that ended with Lithuania and Poland tagteaming to choke out the Teutonic Order and as a sequel to the 16th century the Polish Partitions where Team Prussia, Russia, Austria made the Poland Lithuania team disappear.

The singular word for "slave" and "slavic person" are the same in Swedish (slav), but their plurals (slavar vs. slaver) are different.

Yeah, but they were only half-slavs because their dads were Swedish.
