No. Things worked out as they did because Khamenei was in position to make sure the bunch of clerics he supported were able to win the internal conflict. If Khamenei had been ill things could well have gone the other way.
 
Well, this is the man responsible for just about everything that's gone wrong in Iran in the past, oh, fifty years. This is the guy behind the hostage crisis, the guy pulling Ahmadinejad's strings. He's quite possibly the closest thing there is to the Big Bad of the story.

Could be. Khamenei's chief internal oppenent is alive and kicking and the revolutionary guard hasn't completed it's takeover yet. The longer Khamenei lives the less likely it is that his death will bring any changes we view as positive.

The rumor is I feel unlikely to be true mind.

Not a valid argument in this case. The guy is 70. As long as he remains in power there is a risk of haveing to deal with an unknown quantity in short order. So in that respect it makes little difference if he is dead or not. We still have the the problem that a month down the line we may have to deal with an unknown quality.

Khomeini actually is still dead.
