Correct me if I'm mistaken, it was another issue I cared very little about, but didn't he resign?

I wish he hadn't, that seemed like even less of a story than this nonsense, but if the guy quits, it's difficult to throw a support rally for him.
 
He did. He was a conservative who did the same as Weiner, except he was shirtless as opposed to pantsless. When it got out he resigned.

I'm a liberal, but I try hard to never be a hypocrite. People were happy to jump on Lee as a sick pervert and "oh how these conservatives preach one thing and practice another". I'm sure I was one of those voices.

So I can't in good faith say it's ok for Lee to be humiliated and mocked and think Weiner deserves a pass because he's liberal like me. And people shouldn't be defending Weiner if they didn't defend Lee. That's just partisan.

If we decide that a politician's sexual/personal life isn't relevant than it's not relevant for BOTH PARTIES. We can't say this has no bearing on Wiener as a politician and then criticize Newt for getting a divorce. We have to be better than that.

The same point (about Lee) was brought up in the other thread, and Puppycow went to the trouble of digging up what people actually said at the time about Lee, and it's not what you think. So you can stop with the righteous indignation now.

Sorry but Kingmerv, Tshaitanaku, Meadmaker, etc. do not make up a majority opinion of the U.S. People did gleefully attack Congressman Lee. He did resign in disgrace.

So it's not a big deal that Newt left his wife with cancer to marry another woman? We're abandoning a person's character as a reason to vote for them?

There is a difference though, and reason why two are treated differently. In general if a Rep and Dem both get caught doing the same thing, cheating or tweeting say, the Rep will have the harder time because it's Reps that spend more time on 'traditional family values'. If your campaign runs on baseball, the flag, and mom's apple pie, your gonna have a rougher time upon being caught with your dick in said pie; versus the other guy who prefers to keep his dessert preferences to himself.

Is it really legitimate to have lower moral standards for members of one party simply because the other one mentions it more often? Is armed robbery more offensive when done by a Democrat because they want tougher gun control? It couldn't possibly be because you identify more closely with the political views of one party and give them more of a pass than the other, could it?

Apparently, yes.

The only reason Lee made any eyebrows rise was because he resigned. If I recall, Lee was/is single and eligible. He may have been embarrassed, but nothing suggested that he did anything "wrong" except for the sudden resignation after the picture was discovered. Even then, no one pursued it any further.

You can read every one of those articles and the comments section below. So no, it turns out that the majority of Americans were not very supportive of former Congressman Christopher Lee for sending half naked pictures to someone over the internet. Why would they be?

They both sent half naked pictures of themselves to very young women when they were both married men. I can think of better people to rally behind.

Not really, Reps tend to get a free pass from their own party and constituents. Democrats get indicted, investigated and criticized by both their own party and the Republicans. So, while the Rep SHOULD have a harder time, in reality, Reps get away with all kinds of unethical/illegal behavior, even when caught.

It could be, but around here you'll find that a lot of times it simply isn't.

The things you name are actually crimes. Carrying on cyber affairs isn't. What is more, lefties don't actually tend to believe that being a 'moral' person about sexuality has anything to do with being a 'moral' person in government. If I found that a vice president of sales in some company were doing worse than Weiner did, and physically cheating on his wife (not to diminish the cyber affairs), would I call for him to resign? Nope.

Many Republicans do claim legitimacy to govern from personal morality and traditional ethics. This isn't just 'mentioning' it. By their own criteria, they would obviously be more affected by such bad behavior. Even so, many political opponents don't call for the resignation of such people. Some call for their resignation regardless of any sex scandal of course, on both ends of the spectrum.

Lee's story lasted a blink of an eye. Ask most people today who Christopher Lee is and most won't know who you are talking about. Lee did not make major news.

Also, do you actually believe you can tell what the majority of Americans think based on comment sections of news articles?!

Morals are subjective. I think in cases like we are talking about it is a matter of judging someone against their own values rather than any imposed by an outside group. My own feeling when it comes to these particular types of thing, cheating and such, is I really don't give a damn I'm not the spouse. Reps make a big deal out of 'traditional' this and that, they get their votes by appealing to people who want those 'traditions' to return. So it's a big deal when a Rep is exposed not following his self-professed morality. Dems run on different things. I'd fully expect a Dem who was exposed as a closet racist/homophobe to have similar issues.*

For the armed robbery bit: sure, I can see looking further down on the gun control suspect than the NRA member, but that's after already looking down on them for doing the deed in the first place.
