• Quick note - the problem with Youtube videos not embedding on the forum appears to have been fixed, thanks to ZiprHead. If you do still see problems let me know.

Oh please NOT Xenforo.

It just about has to be THE WORST forum software on the web. Member configuration is almost non existent. As a user you cannot even decide in what order posts display... you're stuck with latest post at the bottom of the last page of a thread and there is no way to change that on a per member basis.

You also cannot have any member on your ignore list have their posts not showing at all. You are always stuck with their posts appearing on the page without their content.

Meh. Those don't bother me. The only thing that has really bothered me with Xenforo is the infinitely nested posts. And that wouldn't be so bad if other people would bother to actually switch to edit mode and clean it up once in a while.

On the other hand... I also get frustrated with how much effort has to go in here to get more than one quote nested. There's pros and cons to both, but I find Xenforo to be comparable. There are a lot worse out there.

I am on another forum with infinite quote nesting. It doesn't break readability, though a long series of nested quotes does get referred to (crudely) as a "whoramid". It's easy enough to trim if it gets annoying.

OK fair enough, so I'm hoping for the best.

A number of forums I used to use switched to Xenforo, and lost membership pretty quickly as the older members like me found it difficult to use and couldn't be bothered learning.

Whatever NordVPN uses for payments allows yearly subscription payments.

We risk losing members if we switch to any software because they need to learn how to use it. But we may gain members if the software is good.

Are we at risk of losing any historical content moving to new forum software? I'd hate to think that's possible.

We shouldn't lose anything significant. Things will break, the only question is how much work is required to fix things, and how long it takes.

Oh well, it was good while it lasted.

No donation from me for 'fixing' what isn't broken!

Here's the deal though - it pretty much *is* broken. This version of vBulletin is extremely outdated... and the new versions are massively different in functionality. Like not even the same animal kind of different. We can't update this platform without losing all the things that we as users like... and this version is no longer supported.

I'm not an expert... but having been dragged along kicking and screaming through migrations on other forums over the years... Xenforo is pretty much the closest to our old-school vBulletin that you can get.

That's because it's the creation of two of the main software developers of vBulletin 3.x, they got extremely pee'd off when the vBulletin company was sold. Lots of drama ensured, release of terrible "new" software i.e. vBulletin 4, many years of recriminations, vBulletin squandering its commanding lead as the "best" forum software. It was more entertaining than a Brazilian daytime soap opera!

That's something I'd actually enjoy a synopsis of, complete with color commentary :)

I didn't know about the history involved, I just know that there were like 4 or 5 forums I was on that were running vB, and they all said "New version is ass, we have to change" and they all tried something different as a replacement.

Most of them I don't even know what the software is. I know elkarte was disappointing as a user, and several of the others sucked and were really hard to navigate as a user. Xenforo didn't make me insane and was easy to pick up and adapt to.

Except for the infinitely nested quotes, and that's more a matter of other posters being lazy than anything else.

Thank you to the 20 supporters so far!

Your generosity appreciated.

I've always wanted to tip someone a Benjamin, since I'm never going to visit America, this seemed like a good chance.

Currently wrestling with another forum (where I'm a mod) that has just switched to Xenforo.

Icerat, it is probably worth distributing the Xenforo Moderators guide to the admin/mod team, well in advance of the update.

At the very least, all the moderator instructions will have to be updated.

I'm not seeing any warning methods so far, we don't use that on the vehicle forum, so it's possible that it is a feature not enabled. However, it is not in the moderator guide either.

Ooops, ignore the struck out text above, I've just found the 'warning' functionality in Xenforo, I'll run a test on that forum and see how it compares for the mods here.

We went through that too. One of the mods wrote a sticky with instructions on how to quickly edit long posts and there has been far fewer incidents since then.

OH, BTW. Donated.

Nonetheless, any forum software worth its salt would have an admin option to disable nested quotes... phpBB does, VBulletin does... hell even the basic Simple machines Forum does

Anyway... I donated too.

So I can expect you to have an ISF Moderators Guide to Moving to Xenforo ready by the end of the month? :D:thumbsup:

Yes, you can. Click the "Filter" link in the upper right of the threads list.

Doesn't work. It only changes the order of the threads displayed, not the order of the posts in each thread. There is no "filters" link in each thread, and in any case, it doesn't "stick" - next time you log in you'll find it has reverted to the default... "Last message - Descending"

In this forum, you go to User CP > Edit Options > Thread Display Options > Thread Display Mode and choose "Linear Newest First" and every thread is sorted as the latest first.

Xenoforo is extremely limited - it has almost no user preferences other than style, timezone, email options and a bunch of notification options, all of which I have unchecked because I don't want to get an email every time someone a forum poster farts, coughs or sneezes.

For mine preferences such as post order, posts per page, and having ignored user posts not appearing are all Forum 101. They basic functionalities that are far more important than crap like Farcebook/Twitter integration or likes, thanks and mentions.
