In that case, would you be happy to re-unite with Sweden and participate in the EU as a region of Sweden?
Yes, I would. Would the majority of Norwegians? I doubt it. But that has more to do with nationalism and national pride than anything else.
Do you think you would get just as good a deal as Norway would if it was a member state in its own right?
Yes. Right now we're a member of the EEA, which means we have to accept EU directives in exchange for good trade agreements, but we have no influence. Influence through a union with Sweden would therefore be greater.
In my opinion, that is. This is all my opinion, and I've really made no great value judgments, on whether Scottish independence is a good or bad things, or if the Scots want independence or not for good or bad reasons. All I'm saying is that one of the reasons behind the decline in people wanting independence might be the rise of a greater Europe. But I may be wrong, I don't really know the situation in Scotland, I don't know any Scots and I don't know the reasons why they would want independence in the first place.
All I have is my pet theory, which may be wrong. But there must be some reason for the decline, and I saw no other theories put forth.
It's the same theory I have about why Northern Ireland is now more peaceful, as UK and Ireland are now both members of EU, and as such are equal states now in a greater whole. Not saying it's the only reason, or even the main reason, but I think it plays a part.
Influence in Europe is one of the main reasons for wanting independence for Scotland. Because of the qualified majority voting system, small "independent" countries are well represented and have a lot of influence at Council of Ministers level. Scottish representatives have to sit outside until the grown-ups have made their decision. The grown-ups including places like Luxembourg and Slovakia, when the subject under consideration is fisheries.
Even if we were heading for a "United States of Europe" situation, would you prefer to be one of these states, or just a small region subsumed within a larger state?
Rolfe.
I get the Council of Ministers part, which is a very good reason. But I doubt EU will keep this system intact forever, as it is really a very undemocratic system.
I believe that in the future EU will be divided into smaller regions, voting districts, of a federal state, or adopt a republican system similar to the US one. Either way, if your region is part of a larger state or if you're an 'independent' state won't matter.
