SuperBowl 2011: O'Reilly vs Obama

Obama vs. O'Reilly on the pregame show

Did anyone else just watch that? It was one of the oddest things I've ever seen.

The interview itself wasn't unusual, the typical O'Reilly stuff--cutting off the answers, making goofy statements right at he's about to change the subject, "Yeah, you're a big government liberal, everyone knows that, but I want to move on..." (though I have to admit, he was right to press Obama on what he was going to do if the Health Care Act is voted down in the SCOTUS), but why was this going on before the Superbowl.

Very odd.

I've had Fox on since noon (MT), in the background mostly, catching little snippets of the 4 hours before kickoff.

According to the tv guide, 12-4 was the pregame show.
From what I've seen so far, it's been:

12-1: Super Bowl XLV Sunday Pregame Show
1-2: Super Bowl XLV Sunday Pregame Show
2-2:30 Super Bowl XLV Sunday Pregame Show
2:30-3: Bill O'Reilly interviews President Obama
3:4 Super Bowl XLV Sunday Pregame Show

Which one of these things is not like other?
Where did that come from?

Also, though the interview was ok, it was uncomfortable how O'Reilly kept interrupting Obama. I don't watch O'Reilly usually - is that his style?
 
What a strange interview.

He asks Obama about the people who hate him and how it makes him feel, and Obama chuckles. O'Reilly says something like, "Come on--it's a serious question."

Isn't that almost universally true among people with their own cable shows? And among politicians?

Seems like you can't really be either unless you do.

Generally speaking, sure. But in the context of the figure of speach it was used in describing O'Reilly, I tend to think it meant that he likes it even more than you would expect from his ilk. And I tend to agree.

Yes, this would be a proper interpretation.

A couple of years ago, he was "interviewing" Richard Dawkins. And, by "interview", I mean that Bill was just gushing about how much he loves Jesus, every time Dawkins tried to open his mouth to say a word of his own.
(And, that was also the first time I heard his "tides" argument.)

Haven't watched him since, except for a few misc. clips, where he always seems to be the one talking.
 
O'Reilly is such a joke. He attempts to portray Obama as a Marxist intent on redistributing wealth. When Obama points out that he actually reduced taxes O'Reilly's comeback is that Obama gave insurance to 40 million people who didn't have it! Is it only in O'Reilly's world and that of the Tea Partiers where such a thing is considered bad?

Not to mention he used the "Gov't takeover" meme/falsehood but he framed it as "some people say". :rolleyes:
 
Paraphrasing one of the worst bits

"Some people say you've changed!"
"Well my hair's got grayer."
"That happens to all presidents! Some people say you've changed as a person"
"Well, how?"
"You're more guarded!"
"Well, I have to be careful what I say. As president my very words can affect stock markets."
"Not like that! Some people are saying you are personally different!"
"My wife thinks I am the same."
"Come on! You're different!"

It's one thing to ask tough questions and expect non-slippery answers but O'Reilly just made hectoring remarks and asked dumb questions and wouldn't accept reasonable replies.

Good! It would suggest that the man isn't completely shameless.

More likely, IMHO, is that O'Reilly got wound up because he was unable to make Obama look like a bit of a scumbag.

I actually think O'Reilly does have a very tiny capacity to feel shame. But recently he has had to compete with the challenge of the Tea Party. By their standards he's one of the snooty academiac elites who takes pride in knowing stuff so I think he's tried to move into Glenn Beck territory a little by making utterly outlandish and buffoonish comments. Somewhere inside it must hurt a little.

Yeah, sometimes you'd think that (bolded above), but then... the tide goes in, the tide goes out; the sun goes up, the sun goes down.

That's par for the course for him. If he never lets anyone answer a question, then he can later claim that he won the debate because the other guy couldn't answer his questions. Genius!

I think Obama did a great job not allowing O'Reilly play his usual game on him.
ON the other hand, I'm sure a big serving of confirmation bias will have the Right saying that Bill O' showed how poor of a president Obama is.
