So, we launched yesterday, and it went really well - so much better than I was expecting (than any of us on the committee expected).
We had a full house, almost - 233 people showed up.
We started with a rousing version of 'Fill me up, Buttercup' just to get people on their feet and feeling involved. We had wonderful talks from Mark Stevenson and Sanderson, a poetry reading from my other half Simon, and a chat about 'trying' from another committee member, Jo.
We sang 'Born to be Wild', and finished with 'Don't stop me now' ... and lots (and LOTS) of tea and cakes. Then we dispersed - many of us to a local charity pub (all their profits go to charity), and even there, a lot more people came along and chatted to us for linger than we had expected.
It was all very positive. We had feedback about how positive people found it, and how many of them had been waiting for something exactly like this. We had comments similar to what Cuddles said above - they'd like some deeper, or less positive topics to be themed; but they understood why we kept the first one so upbeat. I have fed this back previously to the committee, and re-iterated it after some of the attendees talked to me about it yesterday. It will be considered for future events.
ITV, BBC, and Radio Sussex were there, as was the Daily Mail, so it will be interesting to see what has been said.
The next event is an odd one - there's a special tour being done by the Sunday Assembly founders, Sanderson and Pippa, so we will have something put together for 24th October. Details are still to be confirmed.
After that the aim is a monthly meeting at the same venue. The only real venue issue was a lack of foresight on our behalf about the bottleneck caused when people tried to get to the tea and cakes after. We aim to sort that out for future events.
