Cleaning gadget 'switches itself on' and moves onto kitchen hotplate in 'suicide bid'

Firemen were called to a house fire that broke out after a mechanical cleaning gadget somehow switched itself on and destroyed itself by moving onto a kitchen hotplate.

Local media in Austria have referred to the incident as 'robot suicide' and even suggested it was fed up with the constant cleaning it had to do.

Fireman Helmut Kniewasser was one of those called to tackle the blaze at Hinterstoder in Kirchdorf, Austria.

Maybe the owners did not switch it off. They would not admit this as they would be admitting fault. They must have also left the hotplate on. Another dangerous practice.

How lazy do you have to be to lift a Rhumba-equivalent to the counterr, rather than swipe all the stuff off the counter to the cleaner's natural habitat?

Yep.

Or perhaps just put it in the bin yourself?

How can they prove it was suicide and not, for example, a misguided attempt to mate?

"Damn, she looks hot!"

Feh. I've dealt with suicidal machines dumber than a Roomba. I hate it most when they try to take me with them.

Dang, I thought this was about Marvin from the Hitchhiker's Guide.

That's "maniacally depressed", which can lead to suicidal, but is not the same.

This does sound like the opportune time to start a robot therapy business though...

Money quote?

The homeowner said: 'The company that makes the robots is selling dangerous devices, I intend to sue to get compensation. It has ruined my home as everything is smoke damaged.

The way I read the story she did leave the stove on so her chances look slim.
